Professor Collins teaches courses in recent U.S. history. His research interests are U.S. public policy and political economy. Publications include The Business Response to Keynes (1981); "The Originality Trap: Richard Hofstadter on Populism," Journal of American History (1989); "The Economic Crisis of 1968 and the Waning of the American Century," American Historical Review (1996); More: The Politics of Growth in Postwar America (2000); and Transforming America: Politics and Culture in the Reagan Years (2006). He is presently at work on a history of the energy crunch of the 1970s.
