Lennox's birthdate and birthplace have yet to be definitively established, and contradictory information has circulated about her life. Some misinformation may have been provided by Lennox herself. It is believed that she reported her year of birth as 1720, making her 80 years old in 1800, but recent critics have placed her birth year as more likely closer to 1730. Impoverished at the end of her life and several times given money from the Royal Literary Fund, it is possible that Lennox exaggerated her age to make her case seem more worthy of assistance.
