STATEMENT BY CHANCELLOR RICHARD L. WALLACE

COLUMBIA, Mo. — The University of Missouri-Columbia has responded to the May 7, 2004, Notice of Allegations from the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The NCAA received the University’s response July 1.

University officials will meet with the NCAA Committee on Infractions on August 13-15, 2004, to discuss the allegations and findings relative to the men’s basketball program. The NCAA Infractions Committee will make its final ruling within eight weeks after that meeting.

The University’s response is available by clicking on the link below. The exhibits that accompany the report to the NCAA will be presented as evidence at the hearing and will be made available when the NCAA has completed its review and determined what further action will be taken, if any.

NCAA guidelines require that the institution’s response to a notice of allegations be accompanied by a recommendation as to the penalties that may be considered appropriate given the nature of the alleged violations. The University’s list of self-imposed and suggested penalties and corrective actions is based on a comparative study of penalties previously imposed on other member institutions under similar circumstances. The study was conducted by two faculty members who served on the University’s review team -- Michael Devaney, MU professor of electrical and computer engineering and former chair of the MU Faculty Council, and Carl Settergren, MU professor of forestry and MU Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA—in consultation with conference and NCAA infractions experts.
