Research

My current research interests include the following:

-legislative rules and procedures (especially filibusters in the U. S. Senate, discharge petitions in the U.S. House, and free votes in Canada);

-the historical institutionalization of American state legislatures;

-campaign advertising (particularly use of radio);

-minority politics (particularly the election of minority officeholders and public attitudes toward gays/lesbians);

-the role of party leaders and partisanship in legislatures; and

-Southern politics.
