Supplementary Materials

The pages under this heading are designed to supplement published articles related to the Phytoliths in the Flora of Ecuador Project: D. Pearsall, K. Chandler-Ezell, and A Chandler-Ezell: Identifying Maize in Neotropical Sediments and Soils Using Cob Phytoliths, Journal of Archaeological Science, vol: 30 2003; and K. Chandler-Ezell, D. Pearsall, and J. Zeidler Root and Tuber Phytoliths and Starch Grains Document Manioc (Manihot escuelenta), Arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea), and Lleren (Calathea sp.) at the Real Alto Site, Ecuador, Economic Botany, vol: 60(2) 2006.

Phytolith Production Tables

Deborah Pearsall compiled the data in the monocot, dicot, and gymnosperm tables in November 1997 from the sources cited and coded the occurrences of phytoliths as coded in the original publications.  These tables are not exhaustive; older literature has not been consulted, and publications have undoubtedly been missed.  The compilations are intended to convey general patterns of phytolith production by order, family, and genus.

References are coded by the number(s) following the genus name.  The explanation of the production codes is shown in the sidebar at the left of the tables, and the full references can be viewed by clicking on "References."
Note: The monocot table does not include grasses.
These three tables do not include the types studied at the Universty of Missouri; all taxa studied here in Missouri can be viewed in the Flora of Ecuador table, accessible from the list at left.  A page has also been added that highlights some of our recent findings with respect to Zea mays cob phytoliths.  Please use the link at left to learn more.
