MELVIN Y MORA SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Undergraduate physics students at the University of Missouri Columbia
were deeply affected by the death of Melvin Y. Mora, a fellow physics
major who was killed on June 6th, 2004 in an ambush in Iraq while fighting
as a soldier for the United States. Melvin was a senior at Mizzou and
very close to graduating with his bachelors degree. To honor Melvin and
also to help other students who share his love of physics achieve their
academic goals in his name, Melvin’s fellow students have organized a scholarship
fund in his name. The Melvin Y.Mora Scholarship Fund is intended to be
an endowed fund that will provide a scholarship for a deserving physics
major every year.
Contributions to the Fund are needed to make this scholarship fund
a reality, and the physics students at Mizzou have already begun fundraising
projects. Students from the Society of Physics Students have completed
two painting projects, cut down one tree, and have two other projects scheduled.
Two other anonymous donations have been received in this early part of
the fund drive. The students are committed to seeing Melvin Y. Mora’s name
live on in the Physics Department at the University of Missouri Columbia,
and welcome contributions with gratitude.
If you or someone you know is interested in contributing
to the Melvin Y. Mora Scholarship Fund, checks may be written out to
the University of Missouri, with “Melvin Y. Mora Scholarship Fund” written
in the memo line, and mailed to:
Department of Physics and Astronomy
Attn: Sherry Long
University of Missouri Columbia
223 Physics Bldg
Columbia, MO 65211
If you have any questions or would like additional information about
the fund or about Melvin Mora, please send an email to Yve Solbrekken
at yesmb7@mizzou.edu.
A display has been set up on the main floor of the physics building
with information on Melvin and the scholarship fund drive. We welcome
you to visit the display, and the department! Thank you very much to
everyone who is making this scholarship possible.
