PHYSICS OPEN HOUSE
Saturday, April 15th, 2006
(for ages
3 to 103!)
Do you like
physics? Would you like to learn what physics is all about?
The Department of Physics and Astronomy, at the University of Missouri
Columbia is hosting an Open House! This event is intended primarily for
elementary school, middle school and junior high school students who
are starting to study science and for everybody interested in science!
We would like to introduce
you all to the wonders of physics!
The department encourages students from local area
high schools and those considering applying to the university to visit
the department.
The department Open House gives you the opportunity to experience the
current
research activities in the department, see the teaching facilities,
speak with the professors, and participate in some hands on physics
demonstrations.
What can you expect to see at the Open House?
- Demonstrations about matter,
light, sound, motion and fluids done by
undergraduate students in the Physics Department assisted by several
students from Jeff Junior High School.
- Hands-On Activities: build a spectroscope to
split the
colors of light (scientists use similar devices to examine the
colors of light emitted by different sources such as the sun and
stars), make color subtraction pictures and see
how three different colors
of light add to produce all possible colors, uncover secret messages by
using light, build kaleidoscopes to
mirror your favorite
colors, build a periscope for your next
submarine
voyage, put colors of light
together - and get
something different from mixing paints.
- Wonderful displays of physics
demonstration equipment that you will be able to try on your own
- Recipes for trying physics at
home
- Astronomy presentation
- Saturday
Morning Science presentation
For detailed information regarding all these
activities, please check our Schedule
of Events (PDF format
for
