Everybody is invited to check out the wonderful displays of physics and chemistry demonstration equipment found in rooms 115 and 127 Physics Bldg, and room 207  in Chemistry Bldg. Look at them, touch them, play with them and marvel at what is happening!
PHYSICS and CHEMISTRY SHOW at 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM (rm 126 Phys)
Demonstrations about matter, light, sound, motion, fluids and chemical reactions. We will help you answer question like:
  • can you hammer a nail with a banana?
  • how can you sleep on a bed of nails?
  • how can you see sound?
  • does light travel in a straight line?
  • have you ever met a thirsty solid?
  • how does a firefly glow?
  • will the indecisive color changing solution ever make up its mind?
Presentations will be done by undergraduate students in the Physics Department and graduate students in the Chemistry Department assisted by several students from Jeff Junior High School.
PRESENTATIONS at 10:30 AM in rm 114
Saturday Morning Science
Prof. Sam Kiger presents “Explosion Effects & Blast Resistant Design”
HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES (each activity is 30 minutes long)
9:30 AM - Making Spectroscopes and Secret Messages (rm 127 Physics)
Build a Spectroscope to split the colors of light.  Scientists use similar devices to examine the colors of light emitted by  different sources such as the sun and stars.

10:30 AM - Baking Soda Volcano (rm 207 Chemistry)
Make a volcan erupt in your kitchen!

11:00 AM - Color Subtraction Pictures and Color Wheels (rm 127 Physics)
Make color subtraction pictures  and see how three different colors of light add to produce all possible colors! (activity limited to approximately 25 students/children)

11:45 AM - Making Snow (rm 207 Chemistry)
It is beautiful and warm outside. Do you think we can make snow?

12:00 PM - Making Spectroscopes and Secret Messages (rm 127 Physics)
Build a Spectroscope to split the colors of light.  Scientists use similar devices to examine the colors of light emitted by  different sources such as the sun and stars.

12:30 PM - Making Bouncy Balls and Slime (rm 207 Chemistry)
Let's mix solutions and make a bouncy ball! Even more, let's make slime and have fun with it!

1:00 PM - Building Kaleidoscopes (rm 127 Physics)
Build kaleidoscopes to mirror your favorite colors (activity limited to approximately 25 students/children).

1:30 AM - M&M Chromatography (rm 207 Chemistry)
What are M&Ms good for besides eating them? Come and see!
PHYSICS CIRCUS (DVD) or ASTRONOMY DOCUMENTARY, rm 120
Have you missed our physics and chemistry show? Take a peek at the one done by University of Minessota people. Are you interested in learning more about our solar system and planets? Every hour starting at 10 AM we will have a 15 minutes documentary running. After that take our astronomy quiz!
Don't forget:
  • to  make sure that you pick up some recipes for trying physics at home!
  • to ask about extra credit for your science classes!
