Evaluation of Software that allows children to create their own books

Ultimate Writing and Creativity Center
http://www.buys4kids.com/product.i?sku=155
I liked how this software integrated science curriculum as students were learning the writing process. Rain forests, desert, space, and ocean were topics used while students learned how to prewrite, draft, revise, edit, and publish their work. A computer character coaches students through the writing process with encouragement so that students can eventually be successful in creating their own reports, storybooks, newsletters, signs, or poems. As students learn to create these forms of writing successfully, they will also be learning how to transform their writing into a multimedia presentation. Students will find this aesthetically appealing as they can paint, add clip art, photos, sound, music, animation, and backgrounds. This software takes on the Psycholingustic Perspective as this software gives ideas to aid the comprehension of the writing process. This is a tutorial software that takes on the affective aspect as it creates a postive attitude toward writing. The cost of the software is $10.95 and was created for ages 7-13.

Storybook Weaver Deluxe
http://www.kidsclick.com/descrip/sbw_deluxe.htm
This software appeals to students who love to write or who struggle to write. Using this program, students are made to feel comfortable with expression as they can use text, sound, or music to accompany their writing. Students can also choose to use their own voice to narrate their created stories. Story starters are available. Students can write myths or about their own personal experiences. This tutorial software takes on the poststructuralist perspective as the writer's are making meaning with their written expression. Because this is a program to accompany their writing, this program is promoting a Utilitarian stance while providing a metacognitive aspect as students are applying their thoughts to creating writing. This software costs $14.95.
