Expert System Development in the Classroom: Processes and
Outcomes
- Type of resource: Article (hard copy)
- Source: Eric No: ED341366 Authors: Wideman, Herbert
H.; Owston, Ronald D.
- Description: This study examines cognitive processes
and outcomes associated with student knowledge base
development. Sixty-nine students from two grade 8 classes were
randomly assigned to one of three groups: a knowledge base
development (KBD) group, a problem-solving software group, and
a control group. Those in the KBD group received relevant
instruction and then worked in small teams to develop very
simple expert systems for weather prediction for about 20
hours. Results indicated that expert system creation can be a
viable means of promoting cognitive development for more
advanced students. A tree diagram for a sports knowledge base
(KB), a copy of the weather project assignment for developing
an expert system, and a student knowledge base chart are
appended.
Students as Expert System Developers: A Means of Eliciting
and Understanding Commonsense Reasoning
- Type of resource: Article (hard copy)
- Source: Journal of Research on Computing in
Education. Summer 1994: Volume 26 Number 4 Pg. 497-513.
Authors: Nancy Law and Jon Ogborn
- Description: This article reports on a method for
exploring commonsense reasoning by engaging subjects in the
development of an expert system. The students in this study
were secondary school children, with little or no programming
experience, who developed expert systems reflecting their own
ideas about everyday motion.
An Expert System Shell to Teach Problem Solving
- Type of resource: Article (hard copy)
- Source: TechTrends, Vol. 33, No. 2, March 1988,
pg.22-26 Author: Renate C. Lippert
- Description: This article presents some data on the
effectiveness and benefit of using expert systems to facilitate
student acquisition of procedural knowledge and problem solving
skills. It also illustrates the features of an expert system
shell.
A Simple Application and a Powerful Idea: Using Expert
System Shells in the Classroom
- Type of resource: Article (hard copy)
- Source: The Computing Teacher, November 1988, pg. 12-15 Author:
Carolyn Knox-Quinn
- Description: This article describes a project for Middle School
age students in which they created expert systems using shells on a Macintosh.
The author describes how simple the shell was for her students to master
and use during a short two week workshop.
