How to install Brana90 ================================================================= Brana90 runs on Microsoft windows 3.1 or later. It will run on 386 machines with at least 4MB of memory. ------------------------------Part I------------------------------ 1. make a temp directory on your hard disk. eg. c:\tmp You can do this either from DOS or the Netscape 'Save as' dialog box. 2. download brana.exe to c:\tmp ________After brana.exe is downloaded______________________ 3. exit Netscape. 4. exit to dos. cd c:\tmp type the word 'brana' and press enter. This will expand the compressed file brana.exe. 5. exit (start windows) 6. From Windows file manager, click on file, click on run, (if windows95, click on start, run) type c:\tmp\setup and click on ok. 7. After Installation is complete you will find a Brana90 Icon. -Run brana90 by double clicking on the Icon. (if windows95 you can use the control key and the mouse at the same time to drag the brana icon and place it on the desktop). -Click on file, click on open, load fidel.hed and print it by clicking on the printer Icon on the tool bar. Problems ======== The setup program loads four files into your windows or windows\system directory. Some times these files may encounter already existing more current files. For example you may get a message similar to the following one. "Setup can not replace ver.dll" Do the following: - Exit to Dos - cd \tmp [Enter] - copy setup.lst setup.old [Enter] (In case you need Setup.lst again) use any text editor the DOS editor 'edit' is best for this purpose. - edit setup.lst [Enter] . . . you should see the following four lines SETUP1.EX_ VER.DL_ SETUPKIT.DL_ VBRUN300.DL_ If the offending file is VER.DLL delete the line VER.DL_ . If it is VBRUN300.DLL delete VBRUN300.DL_. Do not leave any blank lines in the file. Save the file back on setup.lst . Make sure you save it as DOS text file (ASCII file). Go back to step 5. If you have the error: 'Setup can not load BranaI.TTF' you are trying to install Brana while the brana fonts are in memory. Exit windows and start windows again. And install brana before running any other program. Another source of problem is a printer that is not properly defined. Make sure the printer driver is properly installed. ==============================End of Part I ========================= ------------------------------Part II -------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- How to define brana as an APP Helper in Netscape. When you use the Web, you can read brana files using an App Helper. Helpers can be defined for files with different extensions. Brana files with hed extensions can be recognized by Ms Explorer and Netscape. However, Netscape uses the helper definition correctly when accessed in 'ftp' mode but assumes every extension it does not know is a 'bin' or 'exe' when accessed by the 'http' instruction. I believe that is a bug in Netscape. For the above reason I save all my brana files to be used by web browsers as rtf files. You can create your web files with hed files also. But Netscape users will be forced to define their exe,bin helper as brana. Brana can save files in rtf format. There fore it is advisable to save files for use in Web applications in rtf format. Here is how the rtf App helper is defined to use brana. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -Netscape (start Netscape) -Options -Preferences (General Preferences) Find a line that defines rtf files. It probably looks like the following. application/x-rtf Ask user If you do not see the 'Ask user' under Action, select the line by clicking on it. Then find a row labeled 'Action' and select 'Unknown: Prompt User'. The Action in the highlighted line should read 'Ask user'. -Ok When you try to view an rtf file a dialog box will be displayed and you will be asked to define an rtf file viewer. Browse and click on c:\brana90\brana90.exe =================================End of Part II ========================== ------------------------------Part III -------------------------------- How to define your mail browser to use brana. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I used only Pegasus Mail v2.42. However, I was told the latest version of Eudora can also be defined to use brana. Pegasus. ------------ - run Pegasus - click on file - click on preferences - click on attachment viewers - click on add - select attachment's file extension. - in the box labeled 'Matches' type the word hed - select run this program - in the box left for the program name type c:\brana90\brana90.exe - in extension to use for temporary file, type hed - click on ok - click on close when you get an attached mail click on the attached brana mail and click on use viewer. Mails attached by Netscape and sent usually arrive with file name UNTITLED. To read brana files sent by Netscape using Pegasus, define a second viewer similar with the above but one small change. in the box labeled 'Matches' enter '.' (ie a decimal point) only. Eudora -------- In windows 95 use the following . Some are single clicks, some are double. Some are button and tab selections and in two or three places you may have to type some characters. - my computer - control panel - view - properties - file types - new type - description of type enter 'Brana files' - associated extension enter 'hed' - new - action enter 'open' - program enter 'c:\brana90\brana90.exe' -ok -ok -close when you click on attached mail with 'hed' extension the system will be forced to call brana. ==============================End of Part III=========================
