These essays were submitted as revised drafts for Preliminary Essay 2, due October 2, 1995. The
Assignment called for an
essay on Chaucer's construction of character in the "General Prologue" of The Canterbury
Tales. As an alternative some students wrote their own original portraits in the manner of
Chaucer. The essays below are organized according to the Pilgrim selected for analysis. The
original portraits are presented alphabetically accordimg to the author's
last name.
