Campaign '96:

A functional analysis of acclaiming, attacking and defending
 
 
  Seeing Spots

This book articulates the Functional Theory of Political Campaign Discourse, which is then applied to each part of the 1996 presidential campaign.  From the primaries, debates, television spots, and talk radio appearances are analyzed.  From the nominating conventions, Keynotes, Acceptances, and speeches by the candidates' spouses are studied.  From the general campaign, debates, television spots, radio addresses, and free tv time remarks are investigated.

The functions (acclaiming, attacking, defending) the topics (policy: past deeds, future plans, general goals; character: personal qualities, leadership ability, and ideals), the targets, and the topics addressed are all analyzed.
