This site is intended as a source of information and support for people who have chosen or are considering a childfree life. I hope that this site will also be accessed by people who are having trouble dealing with the choice of a friend or family member to remain childfree. Hopefully, this site can provide useful insight.
I had not intended this site to be a source of support for those who have the misfortune of being childless by circumstance, although they have always been welcome to any of the information here. But after reading Mardy Ireland's "Reconceiving Women," I've decided that women who don't have children have many of the same concerns regardless of whether or not they chose to be in that position, and I strongly recommend this book.
I also want this site to be a starting point for people who are considering a childfree life. Being childfree is not for everyone, and volutary sterilization is certainly not a decision to be made lightly or rashly. If you are considering childfree, please consult the Links, books and other information on this site or read Robert Maxen's article, "Shall I Be Childfree?" You might even consider lurking around alt.support.childfree. But above all, spend some time in honest reflection.
Population concerns did not enter into my decision to be childfree, therefore, there is no information on that at this site. Zero Population Growth, Inc. and Voluntary Human Extinction Movement have a very informative webpages for people who are interested in that aspect.

If you are not childfree, and just curious about "us," please keep in mind that choosing not to have children is not the same as disliking them. I seem to get a lot of nasty e-mail from people who confuse the two. I prefer to use the term childfree to make the distinction between people who do not want to have children and people who cannot have children (childless). The term itself has nothing to do with liking or disliking children.
