Research Interests:
Much of my past and ongoing work has focused on examining the effects of prefrontal dysfunction as well as the effects of age-related changes in prefrontal function on inhibitory control in children (i.e., cerebral palsy, autism, sickle cell disease, phenylketonuria, uncompromised development) and adults (i.e., traumatic brain injury and uncompromised aging). By making systematic comparisons across various etiologies of prefrontal dysfunction and across different epochs of the life-span, it is my hope that a comprehensive model of inhibitory control may be constructed that accounts for functional outcomes resulting from brain damage and resulting from uncompromised life-span development. The long-term goal of my research is to facilitate the design and implementation of more effective rehabilitation strategies to improve cognition, daily function, and quality of life for children and adults with brain injury.
Another line of my research is aimed at understanding the neural underpinnings of complex cognitive processes in neurologically uncompromised individuals. For example, I have recently been involved in a project designed to elucidate the neural substrates underlying deception. In approaching this issue, my colleagues and I utilized neuroimaging techniques (i.e., fMRI) to dissociate the pattern of sustained brain activity associated with a deceptive state of mind and the pattern of transient changes in brain activity associated with specific instances of deception (i.e., a lie).
Yet another aspect of my work is the study of visual events that influence attention in a stimulus-driven, bottom-up fashion. One such event that is known to capture visual attention is the appearance of a new perceptual object. Recently, Richard Abrams and I have identified another event, the onset of motion (i.e., “new” motion), which appears to also capture attention in a stimulus-driven manner.
