Dissertation: “Albarwild’s Nexus of New Play Development: The Playwrights Unit, 1963-1971”
An historical study looking at the new play development techniques of the Playwrights Unit of the Broadway producing partnership of Albarwild, Inc. (Edward Albee, Richard Barr, Clinton Wilder) which produced plays in workshop productions off-off-Broadway in the 1960s.

Courses Taught

THEATRE 1100 –  The Theatre in Society, an introduction to theatre course. (3 credits). Examines the form and meaning of theatre in civilizations of the West from the ancient Greeks to modern times. A large lecture course involving Webct course management, powerpoint and multimedia presentations, as well as hands-on theatre experience and guest artists.

THEATRE 2700 - New American Theatre (3 credits). Survey of drama of the most recent decade as it documents contemporary mores and amplifies cultural themes.  Included are playwrights of Latino/a, African-American, Asian-American, and Native American backgrounds. Writing Intensive.

THEATRE 2710 - Introduction to Theatre History (3 credits). Survey of major periods emphasizing the produced play in its historical context.  Course includes discussion of primary sources in dramatic literature, theory, and history from Greeks to Present.

THEATRE 2920 - Beginning Playwriting (3 credits). Study and practice of playwriting fundamentals, emphasizes the one-act play. (cross-listed as English 2560).

THEATRE 3700 World Dramatic Literature (3 credits). Survey of world drama from Greeks to present, focusing on structure, theory and performance.  Focus is upon Asian, African, Latin American, Caribbean, touching upon (cross-listed as English 3170). Writing Intensive

THEATRE 3920 Intermediate Playwriting (3 credits). Intermediate study of the writing process as applied to theatre, leading to the creation of a full-length play to be considered for production. (cross-listed as English 3560).  Focus is upon traditional dramatic structure, and exploration of behavior and subtext in dramatic writing.

THEATRE 4820/7820 - Studies in Dramatic Literature (3 credits). Advanced survey of major movements, periods and writers.  Focus was upon the dream play, including the plays of Calderon, Shakespeare, Ionesco, Adrienne Kennedy, Irene Fornes, Edward Albee, Strindberg and others. 

THEATRE 4920/7920 - Advanced Playwriting: Problems (3 credits). Advanced study of the writing process as applied to theatre, including theory and practice of special playwriting problems & techniques. Prerequisite: Theatre 3920 or English 3560, Intermediate Playwriting. (cross-listed as English 4560/7560).  Dreamwork utilized as an organic technique into the realm of non-linear, non-realistic technique.

THEATRE 8720 - Backgrounds of Modern Theatre Practice (3 credits). Survey of modern performance theory, aesthetics and practice. Emphasis on European theatre since 1875.  Focus has been upon modern, post-modern, and post-structuralist theories and theorists.
