I'm primarily a playwright. My plays have been produced all over the United States, although most have been produced in New York. See my Curriculum Vitae page and my Plays page for details on my plays and their productions. I am an assistant professor of playwriting in the University of Missouri-Columbia's Department of Theatre. I serves as the artistic director of MU's newly-founded Missouri Playwrights Workshop. my play Men Dancing was recently read in New York featuring Broadway performers Joel Grey, Elizabeth Franz, and Justin Kirk at Primary Stages under the aegis of Daryl Roth Productions. Men Dancing received the 1996 21st Century Playwrights Award, and has been developed at Jewish Repertory Theatre, HB Playwrights Foundation, and Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York. David is the founder and former artistic director of The WaterFront Ensemble, Inc., a professional non-profit organization dedicated to the development of New American plays. I am a recipient of an MU Summer Research Fellowship for my play Tekiyá, which was performed this summer in a staged reading at the Corner Playhouse and directed by Dr. Suzanne Burgoyne. This summer also saw a staged reading of my play Queens Orphans at the Society for Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation in New York, and a staged reading of my play Violet Palimpsest at 1999 National Conference for the Association of Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) in Toronto, Canada.
I received my MFA in playwriting in 1986 from the University of Texas at Austin and is a graduate of the conservatory acting program of Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts where I received my BFA in acting in 1983. I recently completed my PhD in Theatre at the City University of New York Graduate Center. Plays read or produced in New York and elsewhere include include: Beshert, Perfect Hair, Tekíyah, Men Dancing, The Source of All Our Goodness, Meadow, Shot Dead, Stampede, The Coast Line, Hierarchy of Angels, The Queens Orphans, In Transit (The Coast Line, Long Rider, Cross The Hudson), Jersey Shore, The Zenith Escape, Lantuchs & Laughter, Seven Were Hanged, Penny Dreadful. My plays have been produced by University of Southern Florida at Tampa, Nebraska Repertory Theatre, Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey, Jewish Repertory Theater, The Phoenix Ensemble, Seventh Seal Ensemble, Village Gate One Act Festival, Hasselfree Productions, Ironbound Theatre, Stages Productions (St. Louis, MO), Creative Theatre Unlimited (Princeton, NJ), Big State Productions (Austin, TX), Rutgers University, and the Austin Melodrama Theatre (Austin, TX). I's play Beshert recently won a Panelist's Choice award at the 2000 Last Frontier Theatre Conference.
I am currently under contract with BackStage Press to write a book on New York's off-off Broadway in the 1960s entitled The Off-Off Broadway Explosion. I have contributed my play Beshert and several dream exercises to Playwright's Master Class, a new book on playwriting edited by Michael Wright, which will be published by Heinemann Press in November of 2000. In addition, I am contributing a ten-minute play, Perfect Hair, to Gary Garrison's new book on ten-minute plays, also put out by Heinemann.
I am a member of the Dramatists Guild, SAG, AFTRA and am an AEA Eligible Performer. I'm also a member of ATHE, ASTR, TCG, and Phi Kappa Phi.
