The People

Home The Dance The Music The People Meet Us

The dance would be nothing without the people. Two regular attendees to the Friday night dances talk about their experience with the dance. For them, the dance is not about individual motives or moves, but about the collective attitude.

Peter Yronwode has been dancing for ten years. He describes the dance as "the most fun you can have with your clothes on".

Listen as he explains the community aspect of MMTD.

Bonnie Chasteen, a Columbia native, says everyone takes something different from the dances, but that there is a group mindset that drives them. (:35)

Top Ten Things That Make a Good Contra Dancer

1) Is always on time for the next figure, and makes sure his/her partner is as well.

2) Has a smooth swing. All motion should be horizontal, none vertical. Hold your back straight with your arms up,

your shoulders parallel to your partner's and your weight over your own feet.

3) Moves gracefully through all figures. Remember, we're dancing. Avoid trudging, marching, running or hopping.

4) Gives lots of eye contact. On all figures look at the people you are dancing with.

5) Dances with the entire set and not just as an individual or a couple.

6) Always makes sure their partner has a good time.

7) Can dance the opposite part. Men will learn a lot from dancing a men's chain. Women will learn a lot from leading a swing.

8) Can dance well with newcomers. Make them feel welcome and help them learn.

9) Is always courteous to the other dancers.

10) Avoids making any reckless movements. Remember that there are other dancers on the floor.
