Greek Travel Links:
For links about Greek culture (archaeology, history,
etc.), be sure to visit my appropriately titled
Greek Culture Links
.
(Sites with * after their grade are not located in the
United States; ! is for sites with links back to my guide.)
The Major Greek Tourism Sites (Try
Each of These)
Hellenic Ministry of Culture
: Has an amazing number of sites and museums linked
to and described here. Top notch. Be sure and look at their cultural
map of Greece.*
Tourist Guide of
Greece - Plous S.A.
: Has the standard interactive map, but this site has quite
a bit of information on different regions and a large number of photos for
each. *
Hellas On Line - Greek Pages
: Quite a lot of choices here and it sure looks good, but
they seem to have fallen behind in filling the pages out. Lotsa "Under Constructions"
are found here. *
Dilos: The Regions of
Greece
: Every time I stop by, they have a few more sites listed.
Keep up the good work and this will be a top notch site.
D.U.Th. WWW - Tour to Greece
: This site may not have information on the site or town
you are looking for, but if they do it will be a good summary of the place.
They still have a number of sites left to add, but it is a good source
for some places in Northern Greece. Decent graphics and good intentions
count for something. *
Traveling: Greece / Hellas
: Not too bad. Has some articles each month that are worth
looking at. Also lots of other options not fully explored here.*
infoXenios
: G.N.T.O. Tourism Information - Greece
: Graphics will WOW you. Awesome looking but it's too
bad they decided to stop after including the info to about five sites!!!!!
Aegean Map of Greece
: Broken down into regions where you can view the
sites of each area, there is some good information, but only one page per
region (e.g., Laconia, Corinthia, Argolis). *
Travel-Greece
: They only have information on a few cities in their
collection (one is Athens though), but they look like they may improve.
Let's hope so since it looks good so far.
Gradus Tourist Guide of
Greece
: Though they only have a page for each prefecture,
it does have a nice look and some good information (including lots of practical
data like times and phone numbers).
Travel Guides (these sites have
actual content)
Mining Company: Greece :
This is absolutely THE place to start looking for
information on your vacation to Greece. They've devoted some time to this
section and it shows. There are links and articles here to provide
you with types of information I haven't even begun to dream of. Unfortunately
they've dumped their main 'Travelogues' section which was quite helpful.
At least they have kept the one for Greece. Thanks to deTraci Regula!!
Microsoft Expedia: Greece
I used to really enjoy this site. But they've done nothing
to keep my interest. They have decided to use half the page now for
advertisements which really pisses me off. But they do have some good
info. Love those backgrounds though.
Travelocity: Greece
: Some good tips here you might want to see before
leaving on your journey as well as some pics and other things.
World Travel Guide
: Greece : Quite similar to Travelocity, this site
is a little dull looking but does have all the basic information.
Adventures
Great and Small: Greece
: For those hardy individuals out there ("Independent
Adventure Travel"), this site is dedicated to those who are looking for the
out of the way places where camping and hiking are at their best. Some standard
links and some more detailed info for those toughing it out, but it's not
everyone's cup of tea.
Focus
on Greece
: Nice look. Interface is a little irritating.
They haven't added anything in quite some time.
Leisure Planet : Greece
: Actually has quite a bit of actual information (i.e.,
not just pictures like so many of these sites). Simple interface and
a clean look go well.
Rick Steves' Europe
Through the Back Door: Greece
: A wonderful TV series that needs more content before
it gets a better mark.
Lonely Planet
-- Destination: Greece
: I don't like sites that are too commercial but
though they do push their guide books, they also have some "suggested literature"
that is worth a look at. I'm talking about non-travel related books that
will get you in the mood to go to Greece. Other basic info on Greece is included.
Atevo: Greece
: Primo looks but needs more content.
Rough Guide - Greece
: What an absolutely awful interface. Less than half
of your screen is actually about Greece. The other part is ads and
links to purchase their books. This is utterly pathetic. Don't
waste your time here.
Tours to
Go : Greece
: Commercial but with some decent info.
Preview Travel : Destination Guide : Athens
: Uses information from Fodor's. This site doesn't
have too much material, but it is nicely presented.
VisitEurope
: Greece
: Presented by the European Travel Commission, there's
not much info here (maybe they should rethink this site's value).
On the other hand, the whole thing does look great and may expand one day.
Indices with Greek Travel info (All You Could
Possibly Want to Find on Greece)
Phantis
: Very nice look and it looks like they may have quite
a bit of info also. !
Thea - The Complete Greek Indexer
: A great selection of links and a good search engine.
The layout is very good also. !
GoGreece
: Not really a "Greek Yahoo" but the format is the
same. You can find some good links here yet it is not all encompassing.
Also has the "site review" beside the link. !
HIWAY - Greek Indexer
: Coming in as fourth in the major Greek indexes, this
one has no subdivisions under "Travel" which makes searches irritating. Try
the others first.*!
Hellas-Net
: "The Complete Database of
Hellenic Computer Resources," looks very nice, but should contain more subcategories.
A good place to scour if you've seen 'em all already. *
Robby
: Another Greek indexer. Simple but effective
interface. Doesn't slow you down.*
HellasWeb
: Gong!
Hellenic Who is Who - Home Page
: Sort of a Greek Tourism Index, they don't have this thing
figured out quite yet. Each region has its own links to hotels, taxi's, etc.
but it is a pain to use. *
Europe Online Greece
: Some more of the basic starting points but you
can get to other countries easily through here. This loads up the Greek page.
Hellenic Hompages
: Pretty bad interface here.
Travel sites that might as well be indices (i.e., mostly just links)
City.Net Greece
Lots of good, updated links to other sites here, even links
for places relating to certain towns and sites. Nice layout also.
Yahoo! Travel : Greece
: This has some good starting points.
INFOHUB Greece Travel Guide
: Really just a compilation of links, most of them
accessible elsewhere.
TRAVEL.org :GREECE
: Some good links here, but quite a few that are out of
date, also there are quite a few travelogues of trips to Greece here. No
content here though, just links.
CNN
Travel Guide : Greece
: It may just be me, but I really don't like their format
(too...many...frames...). No content whatsoever. Just a Shockwave map
that didn't load correctly. A few links, but CNN should be able to do much
better than this crap.
Simos Travel
: Some basic links to Greece. Commercial travel
information included. Very simple.
GORP
- Greece Resource Listings
: Hardly any links, but has a couple unique ones which are
found here not listed in others.
Cyberwonder's Travel
- Greek Page
: Just links to Greek sites. !
Official Governmental Sites
Specific-Site Pages
Athens Survival Guide
: Matt Barrett has put a lot of time into this site and
it shows. There is a lot of material here. You can also try his Greek Travel
Page and his Greece Travel Guide. I *used* to have a link from his
site but it disappeared. Maybe one day I'll get paid for the links
I provide too.
Athens : Frommer's
: Part of Frommer's "Outspoken Encyclopedia of Travel,"
this is more specifically part of 200 of the best cities "to which people
go." Could stand to have more actual information.
Metsovo Home
Page
: A page in Greece that focuses on the sights and uniqueness
of Epirus, especially Metsovo.*
Kos Travel Home Page
: A nice site on travel in Kos.*
Die Bildergalerie (Photographs Taken of the Buildings on the Acropolis between
1860 and today)
: A great source of big old photos. (They've got
a wonderful museum also!). *
Tasos
Papagiannakos' Laconia
: Includes lots of good information on Sparta and
Mistras (among other sites). I wish there were more sites like this
one. Available in 6 languages also!!! *
Travelogues and Backpacking Sites
Rec.Travel Library
: Greece travel information
: The best site for travelogues on Greece. Links to all
of them out there that are worth their weight in nitrogen. Plenty of other
info on travel also here. !
The Civilized Explorer
: A travelogue site with specialized interest pages
(like Adventure Travel), and tons of links.
Virtual
Tours of Special Interest
: No particular order here, but they do have my link
here among their many.!
The Traveler's
Exchange
: Another site devoted to online travel with links
to other travelogues. Stagnant. Hasn't been touched in ages. !
Cyber Adventures
: Another travelogue site with plenty of information
to get you anxious for your vacation.
Eurotrip Travel Tales
: Pretty good site overall. Has lots of other
information on traveling in Europe. This link is to their section on
Travelogues. !
Roadnews
: "Resources for the computer-equipped traveler."
Greece: Land of Enchantment
: A newsletter about Greece. Nice look, but not that
much information yet.
Yahoo!
- Recreation:Travel:Travelogues
: Yahoo has finally placed a link to my site and since
I use them constantly on my searches, I better call off my self-imposed boycott
of their pages (they hadn't listed my site for well over a year despite my
pleas). Try their sites in other languages also, you can find more information
on Greece if you can read a different language.
Backpacker's Index
: Links divided up into regional groups. Rating system
used with links (possible four stars). Other useful info also, like currency
converter. *!
Backpack Europe on a Budget
: Not just a collection of links. Lots of advice, bulletin
boards, contests, etc. But of course there are a ton of links too.
!
Personal travelogues and sites
General Greek Sites
Headline News of
Greece - Phantis
: Articles compiled from major resources each day.
Probably the best way to get up to date Greek news from a variety of sources!
Magical Journey to Greece
: My momma used to tell me, "If you ain't got nothin
good to say about somebody, well don't say nothin at all."
Maps of Greece from Earthrise
: Photos taken from the U.S. space shuttles of Greece.
Greek entry is always changing so you may have to start out at their main
site and look for photos of Greece that way.
Oreivatein
: A wonderful site on the mountains of Greece with
lots of maps, charts, video footage, etc.
Laconian Professionals
: Now it doesn't sound like the average travel site,
but it has some terrific information on local sites in Laconia (I talk about
Sparta and Mistras). This is worth the stop.*
The Shrine of the
Modern Greek Language
: It really will help...honest
Greek - Turkish
Friendship Page
: Has got the right idea. Constantly updated.
Angie's
Hellenic Page
This is one of the best places to start if you are
looking for info on Greece not solely related to travel there.
Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs
:
Pretty cool. Check out the relations between Greece and
your country.
Ellada.com home page
: Has a lot of travel info you should check before
you leave, like helpful flight, currency, etc.. stuff. But not that appealing
to look at or use.
Hellenic Resources: Tourism
& Recreation
: Links to lotsa Greek tourism resources.
Greek Culture
Links by K. Douridas
: Culture, Regional, Travel, Universities, and Ancient
Greek links all on one page. Lots of them, but they are crammed in pretty
tight. *!
Camping in Greece
: A large collection of campsites throughout Greece.
This is the place to go if you plan on sleeping in a tent instead of a hotel
room.*
Hellas Net Greek Links
: Not much to mention, but it has the regular tourism
links.
Greece Around the World
: An ambitious site with it's own info on each of
the major Greek regions (and lots of nice photos), but still has a long way
to go.
Images from Greece
: Need I say more?
Selected Sights
from Athens
from Delphi
and the Peloponnese
: Lots of good pictures and some maps, but very little
text to go along with them.
Subway system of Athens (Greece)
: Helpful, but you need to enter destinations and place
names so it can show you how to use the subway (which in Greece is pretty
easy).*
Soulis' Hellenic Suggestions
: A LOT of links. Really. No descriptions, but if you
are looking for something you haven't found yet, you might try here. !
Greek Village
Online Bridge to Greece and Cyprus Links
: Lots of links over all of modern Greek culture.
!
The Best Greek Travel
Links
: This has all the biggies and doesn't stray too far
into other areas of Greek culture. !
Travel Magazines
Non-Greek, General Travel Sites
Commercial Sites
Eyewitness
Travel Guides:
For your money, these are the nicest looking travel
guides out there. Although they are light on hard facts, the photos
and illustrations are terrific.
Greek Books at Databay
: Let's you look at reviews and covers of books on
Greece.
Dale Rossi, Photo-History (Stereoviews of Greece)
: Ever see those old goggle-like glasses that you
put pictures in and saw them in 3-D? Well you can buy some old ones of Greece
here (course, you better have a viewer first).
A Geological
Companion to Greece and the Agean
: A site where you can order this book. It has some
examples of the text and images here though.
Villa Horizonte
: Uh-oh. Am I getting myself into trouble giving links
to accomodations? Well, this one looks like it may be a little different
from your run-of-the-mill stuff. Designed a little more for the intellectual
retreat and near Volos. Judge for yourself.
My site has been featured by Traveloco and now is available in an abbreviated
version on their site.

I have also been featured in a newsletter article in Frommer's.

Kind words about this site:
European Visits: A Newsletter
of European Travel
: "This is the opening page for an extensive first-person
account of the author's Greek visit. Sections include Preparing, Attica,
Peloponnese, Northern Greece, and Islands; there is a page of Greek Travel
Links as well. Throughout the well-written text, links are included that
let you jump elsewhere on the Web to find out more about particular attractions
& topics. Overall, Dave has put together one of the best "What I did
on my summer vacation" sites we've seen."
GoGreece
: "An excellent reference for someone planning a backpacking
trip to Greece." March 2, 1997
Travelmag
: "Dave Webb's backpacking travelogue in Greece is
an honest account of what it's like with plenty of advice how, where and
why."
Personal:
iguana@aol.com
: "Wow, I was thinking about traveling to Greece in the next couple of years,
but after reading this I wanna go right now dammit! I mean, the isles, historical
sites, and the culture all sound amazing."
