Roundtable Participant, “Historicizing Jane Austen”
American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, Richmond, VA, 27-9 March 2009.

In response to the animated comments solicited by the “Jane Austen Roundtable, Critical Questions” in Portland, I [Jocelyn Harris] propose a continuation of the discussion on Jane Austen in the form of a roundtable on the need to historicize her in an eighteenth-century context. Born in 1775, Jane Austen died in 1817, a stranger to the Victorian sensibilities that have chaperoned her work since it was first reprinted in 1833. Why, asks this panel, does Austen belong to the study of the eighteenth century?

"Cataloguing "The End" -- Reconsidering Closure and the Rise of the Novel"
American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, Richmond, VA, 27-9 March 2009.

Research:
Chawton House Library Visiting Research Fellowship. Chawton, Hamphsire, UK, February 2-March 24, 2009.

Located on an estate once owned by Jane Austen's brother Edward, Chawton House is the home to a collection of early editions of works written by women from 1600-1830. Fellows are housed on the Library grounds and participate in activities at the University of Southampton, including an invited lecture.
