Responses for Chemistry 210
[Responses are complete and verbatim. Emphasis by way of bold face ours]

1.
1. Strong - sense of humor, makes lectures interesting
Weak - blowing your nose loudly, it's a bit distracting, but still
   humorous.
2. Glaser actually cares. He takes time to answer questions. My Physics
teacher on the other hand is so monotoned and like a robot that it
makes me want to stab myself with a pencil just to stay awake.
3. (not answered)
4. Learned a ton of information, this class was not built on information
you learned in H.S. like many other science classes.
5. A
6. 2.9

2.
1. Always well prepared, willing to answer questions.
Should make sure to always bring it down to ourlevel.
2. Knows the subject matter extremely well. Obvious that he knows how
   to teach it.
3. Group work helps a lot.
4. (not answered)
5. B
6. 3.1

3.
1. Very good at organizing material and presenting in several mediums.
2. Showed how science applied more.
3. Could improve if time spent in groups was given more direction or
   guidance.
4. Highest organization and application.
5. A
6. 3.4

4.
1. Overall, I enjoyed the course and thought it was fair and helpful,
I just wish I'd learned how to study for it sooner.
2. More enthusiastic than others.
3. To help cut the procrastination-prone students I suggest biweekly
quizes of about 25 points each. You need not do this for the 1st
test, but for 2nd test, to help keep people on schedule - then they
might learn how to study for the reactions test.
4. One of the better Chemistry courses as well as science courses.
5. B
6. 3.67

5.
1. He is always helpful in answering questions and is really knowledgeable
about what he's teaching. Perhaps he could slow down.
2. The lecturer was one of the best I've had.
3. We need to be held accountable for the info we learned to keep us on
task. Perhaps a weekly online quiz or something. Otherwise the course
was well organized and very good.
4. It is a lot harder and lot more is expected from the student.
5. B
6. 3.2

6.
1. Loud, clear voice, easy to understand
Grading was very fair - exams tested exactly what was taught in
lecture & in textbook. (I'm only a little concerned it was too
easy - tests didn't really ask you to apply knowledge beyond what we
have already seen in our notes. I've been told 212 may be more
difficult w/out this added challenge in 210 (but no way of knowing
   for sure).
2. I thought he was quite good - very clear as to what he expected from
   us.
3. Review sessions were very valuable - more so than the group learning
   - groups didn't help if no one in the group knew what was going on or
weren't absolutely sure on the Chemistry topics. It didn't move too
fast but we were cramped for time at the end which didn't help
matters in a class that already moves fast.
4. (not answered)
5. A
6. 3.7

7.
1. Weak - notes are a bit scattered; sometimes he goes too quick in class
   - I only get about 1/2 of each rxn he wrote on the overhead. No Wed.
night lectures, many students could not attend (I for one work every
   Wed.).
   Strong - v. intelligent; I was v. confident in his knowledge &
ability - tests were v. fair
2. Fair
3. Strong - v. fair tests (but still challenging)
   - always available to answer questions (either TA's or prof.)
4. Fair
5. B
6. 3.7

8.
1. I thought he was a good lecturer. I just don't see how anyone could
make this material easy to follow.
2. Tons funnier, and without a curve it made it tone more difficult
3. Strong - knew how to teach so that we learned.
Weak - Didn't do too much except explain his notes. His weakness is
something that probably can't be improved due to course material.
4. More difficult, required a lot more study time
5. B
6. 3.28

and hard to talk to about the course.
3. Strong: Organization ability to look at old exams
Weak: Very difficult, too much information, boring, did not
   prepare well for exams.
4. This course was much more difficult than any other course I have
   taken and more boring.

weak = to detail and specific for general students
2. very interesting and fun
3. It is a good course
4. Easy to follow
5. A
6. 3.2

71.
1. Glaser is enthusiastic and friendly, but talks to some students
as if they are stupid. Be a little more humble, get over yourself.
2. He has more enthusiasm than past professor
3. This course helps memory skills and abstract thinking. However, this
course is worthless because biology majors don't use this in the real
   world.
4. This course is boring as hell.
5. C
6. 3.3

72.
1. Sometimes moves too fast on the harder topics. Doesn't clearly
   demonstrate examples in class.
2. More fair than others, but has extremely high expectations.
3. (not answered)
4. Least enjoyable chem class I've taken
5. C
6. 3.6

73.

1. I would have learned more in this class if I weren't so intimidated by
Dr. Glaser. He, unintentionally, made me afraid to ask him questions.
2. He's the best chemistry professor I've had, but I have learned more
   from my other science professors.
3. (not answered)
4. This is the most interesting chemistry class I've had
5. C
6. 3.777

76.
1. weak - My father was once addicted to Valium, he couldn't sleep
w/o taking it. If he were still around today I would recommend he
attend any of the lectures on Alkane Reactions; it would have put him
right out. man they were boring
   strong -
2. (not answered)
3. eliminate the section on reactions
4. its harder

6. 4.0

77.
1. overheads & examples were strong. The web page is very strong -

   class than others.
4. (not answered)
5. B
6. 2.5

78.
1. - The lecturer is always well prepared and has many (outlets?)
available. - The lectures often go to quickly that it is hard to follow
   what is happening.
2. - One of my science lecturers b/c he seemed very concerned that we
   do well.
3. - There is simply too much material. I would have appreciated a more
   selective focus.
4. - Good course, but a lot of work
5. B
6. 3.85

1. Instructor very knowledgable on the subject
2. Much more interesting and easier to follow than my others

5. B
6. 3.0

80.
1. Very good at getting the point across, however at times the testing
   seems a little rigorous.
2. Dr. Glaser has done very well; more so than many of my former profs
when relating the difficulty of the material.
3. More classes, the pace is hurried and more class/instructional time
   should be dedicated.
4. One of the few that requires of me a concerted effort.
5. B
6. 2.9

81.
1. It would be a lot more interesting if you didnšt lecture over just the
notes we can read off web.
2. Not very exciting and not able to stimulate interest.
3. (not answered)
4. I very much disliked this class.
5. D
6. 2.8

2. Almost equal to all other Profs of science
3. (not answered)
4. Equally difficult
5. C
6. 2.8

83.
1. Instructor was very knowledgeable on chemistry but at times was very
particular on grading and had too great of expectations. Way too
   much memorization of trivial info.
2. I enjoyed my class w/Kaiser much better. He didn't make you memorize
trivial thing, and he could relate science to topics of interest
3. (not answered)
4. much tougher
5. C
6.	2.99

84.
1. Strong - Provided notes so it was easy to follow along
   Weak - difficulty reading handwriting
2. More involved & provided a large amount of material in class. We were
never expected to read & understand on our own.
3. Strong - the website provided a great resource for learning
Weak - 9 am is not a good time for organic
4. required more work but prof provided excellent guidance for exams
5. A
6. 3.7

85.
1. Very organized, enthusiastic. Always willing to help, but
necessary to understand everything the first time
2. He is at the better end of my science instructors

5. B
6. 2.8

2. Good - having the notes was helpful
3. To much info for the course length.
4. It was very hard & a lot of memorization
5. C
6. 3.7

89.
1. When he would ask the class a question it would help if he would
repeat the answer b/c the classmate usually doesn't speak loud enough
2. (not answered)
3. Having the notes ready for us to print was helpful but having previous
exams helped more than anything. It took the excess work out of
   what needed to be studied.
4. (not answered)
5. A
6. 2.3

90.
1. Use of overheads good - however, a large portion of the lecture seems
too complex at times. If 1 or 2 lectures was like the review
   would be better.
2. Glaser is good
3. Strong - best web component EVER. I have had over 70 hrs of
classwork & this web component blew all of the other away. Great
job - overheads available = nice.
4. Harder material but I had a better grade.
5. B
6. 3.6

91.
1. Don't assume people know things. Go through things step by step.
2. Good
3. Slow it down with less material.
4. OK
5. B
6. 3.2

92.
1. Enthusiasm is wonderful, as well as the knowledge he seems to
possess. Sometimes I feel that he goes too fast! However this was
only at certain points during the semester. (Ex. beginning a new topic)
2. One of the best I have had. Use of notes and the web was
exceptionally helpful. The close contact (e-mails regularly) made the
   class very accessible.
3. Again, use of outside materials was extremely helpful. It was nice
that what we were supposed to know was made clear.
4. (not answered)
5. A
6. 3.7

93.
1. Weak - sometimes we move a little too fast & some things you
show are hard to read (s.a. tables, graphs, etc.)
2. About the same - a little more intense but expected w/this level of a
   course.
3. Weak - Absolute grading & ordering questions cause if you put 1 out of
order you'd get no points compared to a student who put 2 or 3 in the
   correct order.
4. Only one w/absolute grading especially in science.
5. B
6. 3.83

94.
1. The notes were confusing, he went really fast.
2. very similar
3. (not answered)
4. really hard
5. C
6. 3.1

95.
1. He is very excited about his field & about teaching. Dr. Glaser
interacted well with the students & was always willing to help students
with problems. I wish we could have done more problems in class.
2. much better
3. I think the content of the third test should be broken up.
Maybe have a quiz on one part of it. I think why most student don't do
as well is because there was too much.
4. a lot of content & out of class preparation
5. B
6. 3.7

96.
1. Dr. Glaser had a lot of enthusiasm about the material. I think he
did an excellent job conveying what we needed to know & was very
   helpful when there were questions.

3. The expectations were reasonable, subject matter was appropriate.
4. good, although fairly time consuming & not overly interesting (simply
   b/c of subject)
5. B
6. 3.35

97.
1. Strong - has notes for students
Weak - notes are hard to follow
   - doesn't explain reasoning very well for why things happen
2. Other lecturers were easier to follow and presented material in a
manner I understood. This was tough to follow along.
3. ?
4. Other courses were more interesting
5. B
6. 3.9+

98.
1. Definitely knows what he is talking about. Maybe for your honors kids
you could have some do a project creating an index to the over 300
pages of notes. An index to the notes would be very helpful b/c it
is very frustrating to flip through 100 pages to find the 1 reaction you
   want.
2. He is 100 times better than my professor for CellBio this
semester. He does a very good job & cares whether we learn.
3. Overall the call is very good, but there is so much information
crammed in it's overwhelming. This class causes stress.
4. (not answered)
5. B
6. 3.38

2. Very good! He is an excellent speaker and conveys his knowledge of
   the subject matter very well.
3. Strong: Reasonable tests; firm yet effective grading scale
Weak: Group work should be done away with. Make tasks in groups
easy enough for individuals to do.
4. I personally find it much more stimulating intellectually than
both of the previous gen. Chem. courses
5. A
6. 3.0

100.

   of time.
4. Very difficult compared to other classes I have taken.
5. C

106.
1. If using such a big room, consider some type of audio equipment to
   expand reach of voice
   Strong = knowledge	Weak =
2. Similar
3. Too much assigned material on the web. This would be great if
no students had to work for a living or if organic was the only class
   they had.
4. Not as interesting as others
5. C
6. 3.0

107.
1. He tends to get talking very quickly and things become confusing. His
use of overheads & models can help clarify some points
2. I'd say he's the best lecturer that I've had in Chemistry this far.
3. The course's strong point was all of the help available on the web.
Reviews were also very helpful. Showing rxns in the VC might be
   helpful.
4. It was more interesting than previous chemistry classes, but it was
also hard to pay attention to early in the day
5. A-/B+
6. 3.8

108.
1. very enthusiastic, but went too fast sometimes
2. very good
3. I didn't like the group work, weekly quizzes might help people keep up
   with the reading better
4. learned a lot
5. A
6. 3.46

109.
1. He was very well prepared for the class with notes always posted on
the web site and overheads of book diagrams that helped you to
locate them later while studying. Some of the web destinations were
   slightly convoluted and overwhelming though.
2. Dr. Glaser is much more capable of staying on task and not
wandering from the points he is discussing than other instructors.
3. The course covered its material thoroughly, however at times I feel
that having to memorize little numbers or facts distracted from the
   overall picture.
4. Challenging but rather overwhelming in time commitment
5. B
6. 4.0

110.
1. Sometimes the overheads were taken away before all the examples
added could be recorded. Also note where specific examples, tables
and graphs came from the text book.
2. More difficult to understand. Seems more organized than others.
3. Almost too much material.
4. More difficult
5. B

4. This course increases in difficulty as semester rolls on
5. B
6. 3.9

113.
1. He had good notes & explained things well, especially when he did
things in 3D. Improvement would be that he actually be the one to
   teach the Ch. 8.
2. He was probably easier to follow than most I've had. (Most of the
   time)
3. NC
4. It was about the same.
5. B
6. 3.4

114.
1. Possibly work a few more examples - especially on more difficult
things like synthesis! Maybe make practice questions or something
for groups to work on during the weekly meeting also.
   Overall - very good!
2. Very good good organization. Having the lecture notes on the web
really helps! I also took Organic 216 under a different professor
and I felt your class was MUCH easier to follow. Things were laid
   out well.
3. Having a few points outside of the exams was good - it helped keep
confidence and hope alive. Not many weak features of the course -
the time (?) - too early in the morning.
4. Very good - good organization.
5. A
6. 3.5

5. B
6. 3.78

116.
1. Don't turn off so many lights and have class later in the day to avoid
people sleeping in class. The notes on the web are very good.
It would help to bold the things we need to memorize from the notes.
2. Good the notes help to keep organized.
3. The groups are a joke. The visualization centers are to large.
4. Good
5. A
6. 2.8

117.
1. Dr. Glaser is very enthusiastic
   He provides many resources
He didn't relate ideas from one page to the next and from one lecture
   to the next
2. He is about the average I've had for science teachers
3. The book is horrible - get another book
good: he has reviews; bad: he goes over new material in review
too much stuff covered in too little time
4. I did not enjoy this course
5. B
6. 3.9

118.
