10.  What did you like best about the workshop?

Having a complete package, in one place for A) the use of these resources and B) the creation of these resources

best- interaction and  enthusiasm / worst- teaching of HTML chaotic , not always clear on assignments to do

best- food , excellent progam, load with information/ worst- at times format was confusing, tried to cram too much in a short time

best- hands on project with team, gave us newspapers/ worst- maybe we should have had introductions amoung the group of faculty just to say hello and see why people are here

Best-knoledgeable and enthusiastic presenters and chances to work with others/ worst- I liked the way we began but after the intial introduction it might have been better to have more of an overview for the whole program

best- hands on applications/ worst- listening to multiple people giving instructions simultaneously- well intended but frustrating

Learning about sources for news articles on the web.  Also the practice on using the CIITN website.  It was a bit confusing at first exactly what we were doing and what workshop goals were

I enjoyed the discussion on use of groups and peer reviews

I'm glad to see that the "abstract" or summarty can be useful to the scientist

best- we had to work through process of creating a portfolio/ worst- too fast when get to putting portfolio on-line. I also did not always get an idea of what you wanted us to do

hands on practice

Best- information presented, being able to model the portfolios/ worst-not most efficient use of time

Hands on experience, creating a portfolio within a 1 day seminar

use of internet to select chemistry article to evaluate

Actually doing the assignment I would require my students to perform.

interaction with peers

How we connected chemsitry to peoples lives.

The opportunity to learn about html computer language, and to learn about how to integrate the internet into my chemistry course.

Learning about peer review.

The hands on internet usage.

11.  I would like to implement CIITN in my course(s).

o

4.2

Why or why not?

The  concept is sound, but due to the time and effort involved I favor having he students do this using some simple HTML editor themselves (or even Microsoft word) instead of CIITN.

Desire to bring news into classes, maybe not all aspects of CIITN

I want HS teachers to have HS students do this, but its very complicated system (difficult to infuse into an already full curriculum

CIITN is something that I have implemented off and on over the years, the built-in structure will make it easier to start a formal program

Helps achieve educational goals, interesting, opportuity for group work

Question how well it would work with small classes and a commuter campus

Seems like a good way to get students actively discussing topics and may avoid some plagerism problems associated with other types of writing assignments

I see much time being required. This is a limitation, the potential benefits are real

I find the computer environment to be somewhat cold.  I like to talk and listen and observe people.

Too much time commitment. I would like to use and abbreviated version as students would really like to make connections

Yes, because will make chemistry very real to them

already do small groups-makes it more focused and easier to direct the students

Need to work with full time faculty and department chair for approval to use

Students need to understand why they are strying chemistry

I am trying to raise the standard of knowledge required in my class. Writing correctly is high on my list.  Also, this type of assignment requires students persue their interest.

A way to make the content relevant

It is a great motivator for students

I woule like to implement CIITN- I will need to sell this to the principal.

Maybe some format that is not so time intensive for high school students.

It is very relavent and applicable to my course goals and curriculum.

12.  I am likely to implement CIITN in my course(s).

Why or why not?

The research projects within groups is a great idea, but I would not want to do more than  project per semester and not spend large amounts of time on it.   It will depend on wheter I cn make time for this (by eliminating some other topic)

Depends on teaching assignment, variation also might be implemented depending on course

see previous (timing issue)

ItŐs a natural addition to my team-structured Gen-chem courses

I have control over some courses and it seems like the most time consuming portions have already been done (web site, education, etc.)

will try it and see how much is feasible to expect of m students

It depends upon logistics of time and computer resouces available to my students.  Many of our students work anywhere from 10-40 hours/week and it might be too time intensive a project for them.

see above

-

I will probably read more and ask questions then strongly consider trying this Spring.

I hope to when I begin teaching at local community college

Time constraints in having groups meet outside of class

-

-

Binds(SIC) understandy why chemistry affects all aspects of their lives, one of our schools goals  is to create students with technological skills

Yes! However I don't have the computers available, I must do everything by hand.

excellent way to stimulate interest in the course

If not this year- for sure next year, time consuming to prepare curriculum that will be accepted by HS principal.

The major challenge is obtaining the support of the principal.

In some form.

Why or why not?

-

not sure (new to this campus and its students and courses)

-

Time to develop new framework

The need to work in groups and write in order to learn certain valuable skills

will have to reflect on this before deciding

Depends on time and comfort level for me.  I may have them initially do this project "off line" as a poster presentation before going to a web-based project.

time constraints during the semester

-

I  Just reading does not allow them to make them feel it is their project, I understand why they have to do this project

Creating them will be much more meaningful

again time constraints and students lack of computer expertise

-

-

-

I think this will attain my goal of interesting students in chemistry

To develop searching and writing skills.

Not sure about the time frame.

Effective means for educating young people, critical thinking skills

CIITN is a great way to increase student interst in chemistry

I would like to adapt some form but seems to be to time demanding for now.

Why or why not?

-

I think peer review of CIITN or other, could improve my courses

depends if I do this with my students

It's a good learning tool

again an essential component of the learning process

if they do I thnk review is a key o the learning process

IF I implement this assignment then they will do the peer review.

-

-

If they create they need to review

The peer review component is how science works.

I may try it this fall, not sure yet

-

-

-

I have never tried students evaulating other students before. I think it would be interestng

I have learned that students have far better insight of each other than I do.

HS students may not be ready for real "peer-review"

-

I will need to consider how to manage this with high school students.
