The Internet
- Goal(s) for this Lesson:
- Student will gain an understanding of the practical and historical perspectives of computing, the Internet, and the World Wide Web, as specific subsets of Information Technology.
- Objective(s) for this Lesson:
- The Internet
- Student will be familiar with the chronology of the Internet.
- Student will be able to identify and define the characteristics of key organizations associated with the Internet [ISOC, IAB, IRTF, ICANN].
- Student will have a basic understanding of the technology underlying Internet connectivity:
Client/Server Model
Data packets
Protocols -- What is a protocol? TCP/IP as the transmission protocol, moving data over the network; HTTP as a specific protocol for World Wide Web interaction over the Internet.
- Student will have knowledge of the Domain Name Server (DNS) system associated with the Internet.
IP Addressing: unique identification number associated with individual hosts (machines) on the network; format of an IP address (4 octets); IP address mapped to readable hostname; Domain Name Server (DNS) system organized by domains (.com, .gov, etc.), under the umbrella of the ICANN.
