- Student will gain an understanding of the history of Information Retrieval.
- Student will be able to explain why information retrieval is important to libraries and librarians.
- Student will be able to identify and define basic concepts associated with Information Retrieval:

» Indexing Vocabulary -- Controlled / Uncontrolled

- Student will be able to identify and define the components of the Information Retrieval Model.
- Student will be able to trace query processing in an information retrieval system from user to returned results.
- Student will be able to discuss the influence of the definition of the user and the definition of the document collection on the interaction between a user and an information retrieval system.
