Biographical Information

Hans K. Meyer is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Missouri who expects to graduate in May 2009. His dissertation focuses on what motivates citizen contributions to online news sites and the ways news organizations can meet these needs. Meyer worked for 10 years in community newspapers, starting as the Mesquite, Nev. reporter for the St. George, Utah Spectrum and working up to the general manager of the 6,000-daily-circulation Desert Dispatch in Barstow, Calif. He saw the need to involve more citizens in the news process, and through his research, hopes to suggest how the Internet can re-establish a news organization’s position as information guide.

Courses Taught

  • J4700/7700: Online Journalism (Fall 2008) – I designed the course for 30 seniors and master’s students to examine the theoretical underpinnings of online journalism, including uses and gratifications and interactivity, while including practical components, such as blogging, convergence, and soliciting contributions for the university’s citizen journalism site (MyMissourian.com)
  • J1100: Principles of American Journalism (Winter 2007) – Working from a template created by Drs. Stephanie Craft and Charles Davis, I taught 200 sophomores about the democratic mission of journalism using Kovach and Rosentstiel’s book The Elements of Journalism. I added a component to examine more closely how these elements applied online.
  • J8601: News Writing for High School Journalism Instructors (Summer 2006, 2007, 2008) – I designed this summer course to help instructors learn better journalism skills and to be able to pass them on to their classes. I added convergence components to encourage them and their students to use the Web.
  • J2100: News (Winter 2005, 2006; Fall 2005; Summer 2005) – I largely designed my own course for sophomore students on the basics of newswriting, including grammar, AP style and the inverted pyramid. We also explored more advanced journalistic writing forms and finished the semester with a convergence project.
