Harvey S. James, Jr., Ph.D.

Harvey James is an Associate Professor of Agribusiness Management and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Missouri, in Columbia, Missouri, where he is also a Senior Fellow at the Contracting and Organizations Research Institute. Dr. James is editor-in-chief of the journal Agriculture and Human Values and a member of the editorial board at Business Ethics Quarterly. Dr. James received a B.A. in economics and an M.S. in sociology from Brigham Young University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Washington University in St. Louis. Prior to his appointment at the University of Missouri, Dr. James was an Assistant Professor of Economics in the Barney School of Business at the University of Hartford.

Dr. James teaches courses in organizational economics and research methodology for graduate students, and microeconomics, applied microeconomics and agricultural ethics for undergraduates.

Dr. James' research is in the area of transaction cost economics, with a particular emphasis on the economic foundation of trust and ethical behavior. He is currently conducting research on the economic basis for morality, ethical attitudes of agricultural producers, the nature of trust in agricultural contracting and cooperative enterprise, and the relationship between economic institutions and development. Previous research included work on family firms, international strategic alliances, and regulatory compliance costs and budgeting.

He edited the book New Ideas in Contracting and Organizational Economics Research (Nova Science Publishers, 2005). Dr. James has co-authored the book, When Businesses Cross International Borders: Strategic Alliances and Their Alternatives (Praeger Publishers, 1993), with Murray Weidenbaum, former chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors under U.S. President Ronald Reagan. He has also authored and co-authored several chapters in the book, The Dynamic American Firm (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1996), as well as articles in the textbook, Perspectives in Business Ethics, 2/e (Irwin/McGraw-Hill, 2002). In addition, he has published articles in a number of academic journals, including the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Rationality and Society, the International Journal of the Economics of Business, Managerial and Decision Economics, Policy Sciences, the Family Business Review, Agricultural and Human Values, the Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics, Business Ethics Quarterly, the Journal of Business Ethics, and Teaching Business Ethics.

Dr. James is a member of the American Economic Association; the American Agricultural Economics Association; the International Society for New Institutional Economics; the Association for Social Economics; the Agriculture, Food and Human Values Society; and the Society for Business Ethics.

His interests include playing with his two young children, writing stories, composing music, and running (best half marathon time is 1 hour, 25 minutes).
