My Original Music Compositions

Music composition is a hobby of mine. I am mostly self-taught, studying music theory and composing when I have the time. (Although, with two young children, and new home and job, and church-related responsibilities, personal time is something I have very little of.)

Here are some of my original songs. The music was composed and converted into MIDI format with a very nice and easy-to-use shareware notation software called NoteWorthy Composer. If you have any comments about my music, send me an e-mail message at hjames@missouri.edu.

Title

Lyrics, if any

O God, Be Thou Nearby
(c) 2004
A Christian hymn

O God, be Thou nearby, When I doth lose my way.
O God, be Thou nearby, And guide me home to stay.

O God, make haste for me. Mine enemies oppress.
O God, make haste for me, And free me from distress.

O God, forsake me not When I am old and gray.
O God, forsake me not, But comfort me I pray.

O God, forgive my sins. They weigh upon my soul.
O God, forgive my sins. Draw nigh, and make me whole.

O God, who is like Thee! Thy righteousness is sure!
O God, who is like Thee! I'll praise Thee evermore!

Peace Be Still
(c) 2003
A Christian hymn

"Peace, be still," the Master said.

He’ll calm the storm that rages overhead

And pierce the darkness with light from His word

When ye with faith turn to the Lord.

"Be not afraid," the Master said.

Such words of com-fort! All worries are fled.

Hope fills the bosom and carries the day

When with your heart ye humbly pray.

"Come unto me," the Master said,

When ye with burdens on life's highway tread.

Careworn and fainting? Your yoke He will bear,

When ye trust in His constant care.

"Come, follow me," the Master said.

Know by His Gospel to Him ye are led.

Home to His presence, a gift of His love,

When ye obey the Lord above.

Like a Voice From Heaven
Music (c) 1999
The words were written by
my brother-in-law,
Lee S. McCullough III,
when he proposed to my sister

Tonight could last forever, but this is just the start,
So listen to this promise, and listen with your heart.
We'll always be together, we'll never be apart.
We'll always have a perfect love. You're always in my heart.

(Chorus)
A forever kind of moment, a forever kind of place.
A forever kind of memory that nothing can replace.
A perfect kind of blessing from God we may receive.
A perfect home and family, if only we believe.

Tonight could be the answer to thousand heartfelt prayers.
Tonight could be the end of a thousand trials and errors.
Tonight could be fulfillment of dreams of years and years.
Tonight could be a Father's gift for a child's hopes and fears.

(Chorus)

A perfect kind of Father, a perfect mortal Son,
A perfect kind of guidance: Be one.

So take this ring and token, for this is just a part
Of one important promise, so listen with your heart.
Let's always be together, let's never be apart.
Let's always have a perfect love, because your in my heart.

(Chorus)

Through the Years
(c) 1998
For Heather,
On our 10 year anniversary

Why does our love grow each day?
When we often say, we'll be faithful always,
Through the best and through the worst, maybe last or maybe first.
Is it from above? What has kept us both in love?

(Chorus)
Through the years we've loved and laughed and prayed.
Through the years we've struggled much and in our hearts we've strayed.
But we've always known that we belong to each other, right or wrong.
So we grow together, through the years.

Time has passed for you and me.
Who'd know what we'd see, what we'd do, or be,
If we'd make it, if we'd fail, if our love would prevail.
Is it from above? What has kept us both in love?

(Chorus)

Through the years our love will always be ours for all eternity.

Sometimes, do you ever get that feeling?

Oh, Hear My Prayer
(c) 1998
A Christian hymn

Oh, hear my pray'r, oh Lord, this day, and heal my troubled heart
From sorrow, fear, and pain of sin; thy mercy, Lord, impart.
I know that I am weak of flesh; sin lieth at the door.
Please grant me strength, forgiveness, hope, and comfort evermore.

Oh, hear my pray'r, my Savior, King, and bless me from on high.
Thy Spirit and thy lasting peace I feel when thou art nigh.
I know thy love for me is true. My will to thee I bring.
I will trust in thee and praise thy name, and to thy greatness sing.

A Mother's Prayer
Music (c) 1998
The words are by our
adopted daughter's birth mother

Father in Heaven, hear me pray. Bless this child day by day.
Tell her that I loved her so; so much that I let her go.

The decision wasn't easy. I begged for other ways.
But this is not how I wanted her to spend her many days.

(Chorus)
A mother and a father and an older brother, too,
To teach her what is right and wrong and that the Gospel is true.

I pray that joy will come her way when she learns to follow you,
And to wear her biggest smile, like her mommy used to do.

(Chorus)

Just a Parent's Love
(c) 1997
A vocal duet, with piano

Hugs and kisses, special wishes, for their girl and boy.
Teaching them to pray, night and day. It's what brings them joy.

(Chorus)
What will make a family blessed from Heav'n above?
What will last eternally? Just a parent's love.

Baby's crying, toddler's trying. They work all the time.
No time for their friends, just children. But they do not mind.

(Chorus)

Father, mother, sister, brother, hold each other dear.
Learning together, forever, is what brings Heaven near.

(Chorus)

In the Quiet Hour
(c) 1995
Written for my beautiful wife

In the quiet hour, I can dream a thousand dreams,
Of the joy your presence brings to my life each day.
In the twilight hour, I can see a million stars,
Knowing that you're never far from my heart each day.

(Chorus)
I can reach across the way, take your hand in mine,
Let you know my heart will stay through today and for all time.

On the highest mountains I can see across the years,
All the joy and all the fears I will share with you.
If we sailed the oceans, searching by a distant shore,
I will never love you more than I do today.

(Chorus)

Taking all the old and new and all the worlds combined:
My love for you is true, for today and for all time.

Manic
(c) 1995
For piano
