Theater Reaching Young People and Schools (TRYPS) rehearses The Adventures of Robin Hood

After the auditions are over and the show is cast, the students participating in TRYPS children’s theater have a lot of work to do from memorizing their lines to staging the show. Each Saturday the students join Artistic Director Jill Womack at rehearsals to perfect the show scene by scene leading up to the performances on Nov.16 - 20.

Six weeks into rehearsal, the cast of Robin Hood is beginning to take on new responsibilities of the show. Students like third- grader Paxton Krehbiel and fifth-grader Madi Mertz are learning many different aspects of performing. (length 1:45.flv)

TRYPS Executive Artistic Director Jill Womack signs in the students auditioning and makes sure she has all of their paperwork on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007. Auditions for The Adventures of Robin Hood were held at the TRYPS office, 903 Old Highway 63 N.

Womack discusses the merits of the audition process for young students. Womack originally created TRYPS in 1999, as a project for her graduate theater management class and now says that she has 20 different job categories for TRYPS. (length 1:01 .mp3)

Deciding who will read what role, a group of girls practice a scene from the Robin Hood script. If cast, the students will rehearse 1-4 p.m. Saturdays, until the performances on Nov. 16-20, 2007.

Assistant Director Tamra Walker (left) and Womack read the names of the students in each audition group. After lining up the students by height, the directors then decide what students will audition for what role.

Every Saturday at New Haven Elementary School, Womack directs four separate casts for The Adventures of Robin Hood. Blocking the show scene by scene, Womack plans all the movement on stage. "We got so much done with the blocking phase," Womack said. "These kids are sharp, talented, and a sheer delight to work with." (length 2:16 .mp3)
Womack blocks the action of the show during a TRYPS practice on Saturday, Sept. 29. Working on memorizing their lines, sixth-grader Daisy Crane and seventh-grader Morgan Widhalm enjoy practice because they are able to see their friends and learn more about drama. (length :57 .flv)
