Background

I grew up in rural Moose Lake, Minnesota.  I received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Animal Science at the University of Minnesota.  My Master's research involved spending two years in Rabat, Morocco at the Institut Agronomique et Veterinaire Hassan II.  I collected feed samples on farms in several areas of Morocco and then analyzed their nutritive value and made recommendations as far as the need for Moroccan, rather than French or American, tables of nutritive value.  I wrote and defended my thesis in French.  After returning to the U.S. I worked as an agricultural intern for Senator Boschwitz in Washington, D.C.   I then worked for the Center for Alternative Plant and Animal Products at the University of Minnesota for five years, starting as the Program Coordinator and ending as the Acting Director.  My experiences led me to pursue a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota, looking at the transaction costs of policies to reduce phosphorous pollution in the Minnesota River.  For the next four years I held the position of Lecturer at the University of Western Australia in Perth during which time I analyzed salinity issues in Western Australia and pesticides in Vietnam.  Since 2001 I have been an Assistant Professor in Agricultural Economics at the University of Missouri in Resource Economics and Sustainable Development.  For more detail, and for a list of publications and presentations, see my C.V.
