Readings: Readings will be available via the Internet as links from the course web page. The course calendar will indicate the class period by which each assigned reading should be completed.

Tutorials.   This class meets the requirements for Writing Intensive credit and students will complete several tutorials designed to assist with general writing strategies. Tutorials also will assist students with writing essay exams.

  1. Consult the calendar for the due dates for each tutorial.
  2. Complete the tutorial at your own convenience outside of class.
  3. Complete the assessment of the tutorial by the due date.
  4. Review material from the tutorial before the exam. There will be questions on the exam regarding the tutorials

Writing:
Position Papers. Position papers argue a proposition on a controversial issue.

The Draft. Because this is a Writing Intensive Course, the revision process is emphasized. A draft of of your first "Mini Argument" paper and of your first essay will be written. The lab instructors provide feedback for a revision. The draft for your first essay must be 1) 5 pages in length, 2) cite at least 5 sources in the text of the paper, and 3) include a reference page with complete citations for all of the sources cited in the paper.

  • A student who does not meet these requirements for their essay draft will not receive feedback and will be penalized on the draft grade.
  • A student who turns in a late draft loses points for each day the draft is late unless there is a family or medical emergency. A reminder -- papers are due at the beginning of class so papers turned in later the same day are LATE.

The Revision. Your final revised essay will be graded by your lab instructor.

  • A student who does not make suggested revisions from the draft in the final paper will be penalized on the final paper grade.
  • A student who turns in a late revised paper loses 25 points for each week day it is late unless there is a family or medical emergency.  A reminder--papers are due at the beginning of class so papers turned in later the same day are LATE.
  • A revised paper turned in without the original draft will not be graded until the draft is turned in.

Exams. There are three exams.  Each exam covers one of the controversial issues, tutorials, and writing skills and is composed of multiple choice, short answer, and essay questions.  Each exam is 150 points.
