Format.
The course meets twice a week for lecture and once a week for lab. This course is Writing Intensive and this means that there are multiple writing assignments (at least 5000 words) and that there are assignments that are complex enough that they require substantive revision.
Attendance and Participation.
Attendance and participation at lecture and lab is extremely important. Applications are assigned during class periods and can only be completed by students who are in class. New information will be introduced in lecture and lab that will be assessed on exams. Questions about assignments are answered during class. Your regular attendance and participation is expected and necessary for the successful completion of this course.
Courtesies.
I expect that you will be on time and stay for the entire class to avoid disrupting other students. I expect that you will refrain from having conversations during the lecture and reading the newspaper or other materials during class. I
expect that you will respect others even when they have opinions that are different from your own. I expect that you will be courteous to guests.
Late Assignments.
Written assignments are due at the BEGINNING of the class period. Late assignments are reduced by 25 points for each week day the assignment is late unless there is a medical or family emergency.
Makeups. Makeup exams are given in cases of medical or family emergencies and university-related absences. You should talk with your instructor BEFORE missing an exam.
If you are unable to attend a Lab session at which an activity assignment or tutorial is due, or you miss a Lecture session at which in-class points are awarded, you will not be able to receive the points
for these missed assignments. We realize that students must sometimes miss class for a variety of reasons (e.g. job interview, death in family, university sporting event, etc.) While we do not recognize any absence
as an “official” absence, students in this course will have extra credit opportunities throughout the semester to make up points that may have been missed due to an absence. There will be no extra
exams or papers that can be completed for extra credit. Lab assignments can be turned in early if one plans to be absent.
Academic Dishonesty.
Cheating is relying on another’s work in a noncooperative assignment or assistance/allowing others to share from your own work. Plagiarism involves using the words or ideas of another without giving proper credit to the original source. When you take the wording from a source, you must use quotation marks and the appropriate reference to indicate where the material came from originally. Material which is from your own experience or is common knowledge is not referenced. When you change a few words, you must still quote all that has been taken directly. Even when you paraphrase another person’s ideas, it is important to identify the source of the ideas as other than your own. Both cheating and plagiarism are very serious offenses. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken and the incident will be reported to the Provost’s Office for possible further action.
