FW 4200 Urban Wildlife Management
Life History, Research/Management Questions and Annotated
Bibliography - 100 points
First Version Due Friday,
March 11, 2011
Final Version Due Friday,
April 22, 2011
In
this assignment you will prepare an annotated bibliography covering the
literature necessary to write a 5-8 page review paper on the relevant
literature covering how a species of your choice responds to urbanization, and
on a research or management question you
have identified for that species. The species that you select should be one
that occurs in a city in Missouri. Note that you do not have to write a 5
- 8 page review paper.
An
annotation is a commentary on a manuscript. So an annotated bibliography is
your commentary on published materials dealing with a particular topic. There
are descriptive and evaluative annotations. Your work should be an evaluative
annotation, not just a summary of the article. Your bibliography may include
citations from both scholarly and popular sources. However, at least 75% of the
citations should be from the professional or academic literature. The Cornell
University Library (http://www.library.cornell.edu/okuref/research/skill28.htm) has a very useful
page that describes the purpose of an annotated bibliography and gives an
example of a citation and annotation. Note that you should follow the Journal
of Wildlife Management citation guidelines for your citations.
Your
assignment should contain the following items in the order presented:
1.
A one or two paragraph statement of your research or management
question explaining the relevance of your management question to conservation
in urban areas of Missouri.
2.
An outline for a 5-8 page review paper covering the literature on how
your species responds to urbanization and literature on your research /
management question. The literature you use should be referenced in the
outline where needed. The first part of
the outline should focus on the life history of your species and should discuss
how your species responds to urbanization.
3.
A one or two paragraph summary of the key findings that you've made on
your research or management question. AND a one or two paragraph summary
of how those findings would or could be applied to the specific problem or
issue you identified in your neighborhood.
4.
A literature cited section with an evaluative annotation following each
full citation for items referenced in the outline. Please use the Journal of
Wildlife Management style guidelines for referencing material in your outline
and for the full citation in the bibliography (http://joomla.wildlife.org/documents/Manuscript_Guidelines_2008.pdf ).
Make sure that at least 75% of your citations come
from the scientific literature (books and peer reviewed journals). Follow
the JWM guidelines for citing web-based materials.
