Plumbing Practicum

Skill: Sweat Solder copper tubing

Scenario:

You have been asked to cap a ½ copper pipe. After some looking, you cannot find a cap, but you have found a some tubing that was previously capped. Rather than chase off to town for a new 10 cent cap, you decide to use the "L" shaped fitting which was previously capped to cap the pipe.

Materials needed: copper tubing, ½ inch coupling, copper tubing, capped pipe, copper tubing

cutter, propane torch, striker, solder, flux, wet rag, and steel wool.

Directions:

1. Secure a ½ inch copper coupling and previously capped pipe.

2. Use the copper tubing cutter to remove the capped end of the previously capped pipe.

(Note illustration)

3. Cut the pipe so that it extends as indicated on the figure below.

4. Clean the fitting and pipes with flux.

5. Place the coupling on the tubing and use the propane torch to sweat solder the coupling and capped pipe in place.

6. Place one of your name labels on the pipe.

7. Hand the completed joint and this paper to the contest official.
