Awards
The Department of Student Life annually presents the
Excellence in Leadership, Multicultural and Involvement Awards. These awards are designed to honor individuals and recognized student organizations that have made outstanding contributions to their communities through their involvement, service, and leadership development activities. The award categories are listed below:
Student Leader Awards:
University Leadership Award
Honors two students that have made outstanding contributions to the university through their campus involvement, services, and leadership development initiatives.
Community Service Leadership Award
Honors two students that have made outstanding contributions to their local, state, national or global community through their active involvement in community service work.
Multicultural Leadership Award
Honors two student leaders who have displayed strong leadership and advocacy on minority issues and devoted time and effort to the improvement of the University and City of Columbia minority communities.
Wilma Rudolph Courage Award
Honors multicultural individuals with disabilities who have overcome obstacles in the face of adversity to succeed and make a difference.
Emerging Leadership Award
Honors two students who have demonstrated significant progress toward achieving their leadership potential through campus and community involvement.
Outstanding Senior Leadership Award
Honors two graduating seniors who have made outstanding contributions to the campus community through their active involvement in campus activities, community service, and leadership development opportunities.
Leadership Shield
The Missouri Leadership Shield was created to annually recognize a cadre of student leaders who best epitomize leadership representative of the university values of respect, responsibility, discovery and excellence. The Sliver Leadership Shield (for first and second year students) and the Gold Leadership Shield (for upper-class students) is for those students who have made their mark on the institution.
The Excellence in Leadership Multicultural Awards Ceremony will be held on April 22, 2006
Student Organization Advisor Awards:
Best New Advisor
Honors an advisor in their first year advising a student group who provides outstanding support for the student group in all situations an gives the group fresh ideas that enhances their learning.
Lifetime Achievement Advising Award
Honors an advisor who has at least three years experience as a student organization advisor and takes great strides to help the organization's leaders.
Most Outstanding Advisor
Honors an advisor who is involved and available for students at all times, offers knowledge and experience to the organization, and provides assistance and support on an ongoing basis.
Student Organization Awards:
Best New Organization
Honors an organization that has started in the past 12 months which takes the initiative to make the organization visible on campus and has grown in membership since its recognition.
Most outstanding Organization
Honors an organization which has been able to get the campus involved in organization issues, follows it's purpose statement, plays a leadership role on campus, is involved in the campus community, is open minded and diverse, has the ability to accept and overcome challenges to the organization, and sustains the organization in creative ways.
Most Improved Organization
Honors an organization which has flourished into an involved group after having problems, has overcome issues with in the organization, and has increases membership and interest dramatically.
Individual students, faculty, and staff, as well as departments and organizations, are invited to submit nominations for these awards. To do so, download the nomination packet at the top of this page. Self-nominations will not be accepted. Nomination forms should be typed when submitted.
