Home / CTS / Copyright Information The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code ) governs the reproduction, distribution, adaptation, public performance, and public display of copyrighted material. Any person who makes an unauthorized copy or adaptation of a copyrighted program, or redistributes a loan copy, or publicly performs or displays the program, except as permitted by Title 17 Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Act of the United States Code, may be liable for copyright infringement. What's New The Section 108 Study Group Report is available as of March 31, 2008. The group was formed to prepare findings and make recommendations to the Librarian of Congress for possible alterations to the law, addressing some issues thought to be unique to libraries and archives in light of digital technologies. Freedom and Innovation Revitalizing U.S. Entrepreneurship Act of 2007 (Introduced in House 2/27/07) would grant six additional freedoms to users of digital audiovisual materials. Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Act (Introduced in Senate 11/7/07) would create a new federal body to bolster enforcement of Title 17 of the U.S. Code. Perform Act of 2007 (Introduced in Senate 1/11/07) would address artists' royalties in the music issue by setting standards for copyright licenses. Curb Illegal Downloading on College Campuses Act of 2007 (Introduced in House 3/26/07) would provide support to combat illegal downloading on college and university campuses. Public Domain Enhancement Act introduced in the House 5/17/05, to allow abandoned copyrighted works to enter the public domain after 50 years, H.R. 2408. Preservation and Restoration of Orphan Works for Use in Scholarship and Education (PRO-USE) Act of 2005. Introduced in the House 1/4/05, to encourage preservation and restoration of copyright works for research, scholarly, and educational purposes, H.R. 24. Digital Media Consumer Rights Act introduced to amend the Federal Trade Commission Act to provide that the advertising or sale of a mislabeled copy-protected music disc is an unfair method of competition, introduced in House 1/7/03, H.R.107. Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 (Now Public Law 105-304. Passed by Senate on 10/8/98, passed by House on 10/12/98. H.R. 2281). Amends chapter 1 of title 17, USC, relating to the exemption of certain performances or displays for educational uses from copyright infringement provisions, to provide that the making of copies or phonorecords of such performances or displays is not an infringement under certain circumstances, and for other purposes. (The "TEACH Act" is Subtitle C--Educational Use Copyright Exemption--of Title III of H.R. 2215.) Copyright Term Extension and Music Licensing , a.k.a. "Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act" (Became Public Law 105-298 on 10/27/98. Passed by Senate 10/8/98, passed by House on 10/12/98.
