Tips for Slide Presentations
  • Choose a medium weight type
  • Avoid type with fine serifs
  • Avoid underlining
  • Use bold or italic type for emphasis
  • Color may also be used for emphasis
  • Avoid hyphenation
  • Spell out all words unless using an abbreviation that your audience knows very well
  • Use a few colors that offer contrast between the background (dark) and the text (light)
  • Do not justify your text
  • All viewable items (text, logos, graphics, etc.) should be kept 1/2" inside the page borders
Title Slides
  • Use one idea per slide
  • Titles should be short - six or seven words
Text Slides
  • Use upper and lower case type
  • Edit ruthlessly to the essential text. The speaker should fill in the details.
  • Use short sentences or phrases
  • Reveal complex information sequentially
  • Use bullets to organize your points
  • Keep each slide short - five to seven lines of type
