MAE Financial Aid for Graduate Students

MU has a semester system, Fall Semester (August - December) and Winter Semester (January - May), and Summer Session (June - July). Educational fees for 2006-2007 were $276.40 per credit hour for residents or $713.70 per credit hour for nonresidents. Supplemental fees include $11.30 per credit hour for computing and $50.50 per credit hour for engineering courses. International students must take 9 credit hours (full-time) for the fall and winter semesters until they satisfy the credit hour requirement.

MAE Department offers Teaching Assistantship (TA) and Research Assistantship (RA) by 1/4-time or 1/2-time during the Fall and Winter Semesters. The work load is normally 20 hours per week for a 1/2-time appointment and 10 hours per week for a 1/4-time appointment. A 1/2-time appointment is the maximum appointment a graduate student can get during the semesters. Since fellowships and scholarships are not counted as a part of the work load, a student could receive assistantships in addition to fellowships and scholarships. The stipend is $9,400 for a 1/2-time TA and $4,700 for a 1/4-time TA for 9 months (fall and winter semesters). The stipend for a 1/2-time RA ranges from $9,400 to $12,000 for 9 months. Additional research assistantships are available during summer. A minimum of 1/4-time assistantships include a waiver of both educational fee and nonresident fee, but not supplemental fees.

TA is not normally offered for incoming new international students in their first semester at MU. TA is offered on a semester basis and assigned by Director of Graduate Studies with faculty input. There is no TA available during the Summer Session. RA is selected by faculty members who have research funds to support graduate students. There is no separate application form for TA and RA. When a student is officially admitted into our graduate program, the student is automatically considered for any financial aid available and the student's information is given to the faculty for their RA selection. Students may try to contact our faculty members directly to find out the RA opportunity at any time.

In addition to the TA and RA, several MU Graduate School Fellowships & Scholarships are available for qualified students..
