Pre-Engineering Program

The Pre-Engineering Program (PEP) is a program designed to increase the success in engineering for entering students with lower test scores. It also provides easier access to alternate degree possibilities for those individuals who decide to change their degree programs.  Students initially admitted to PEP are enrolled in the College of Arts & Science but are advised by engineering advisors.

Direct admission to Engineering requires:

 1.  An ACT-M of 22 or higher; and

 2.  Either an ACT-C of 24 or a high school class rank in the upper 25%

Those students who do not meet the above criteria are initially enrolled in the PEP Program. Pep students are eligible to transfer to regular engineering enrollment upon completion of 24 credit hours with a 2.0 or higher GPA and a grade of C or better in Math 1500.

Advanced Credits

Advanced credit can be earned through the Advanced Placement (AP) Program for the following subjects: Analytical Geometry and Calculus, Calculus II, Chemistry, College composition, Economics 1014 and 1015, American History, and American Government.

The CLEP General Examination credits are not accepted in the College of Engineering.  The CLEP Subject Examinations in which a student can earn credit accepted in the College of Engineering are:  Analytical Geometry and Calculus, Chemistry, American Government, Economics 1014 & 1015, and College Composition.  CLEP Subject exams are limited to students with fewer than 90 semester hours of college credit.

For further information concerning the availability of departmental examinations, CLEP through the Mizzou Testing Center, the arrangement of testing appointments and all other phases of credit by examination, students should contact:

Coordinator of Testing Services
220 Parker Hall
(573) 882-4801
8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily

There are other subjects in which advanced credit can be earned.  The above areas are directly related to the College of Engineering.  Contact the above office for complete information.

Transfer Credits

A student who may wish to transfer to another institution for a term (Fall, Winter, Summer) with the intention of returning to MU to complete his/her degree program is advised to consult with the Director of Undergraduate Studies to make sure that courses taken at another institution are transferable. The student should request the college he/she attends to send a transcript of his/her credits and grades to the University Admissions Office, and then upon return to the MU campus, check in the Engineering Dean's office to see that transfer records have been received.

Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory Grading

Students may take a limited number of electives on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) basis. Required courses may not be taken on an S/U basis.  Economics and the course taken to satisfy the Missouri State constitution requirement (Hist 1100 or 1200, or Pol Sci 1100) are considered required courses.

Students cannot enroll in more than one course per term on an S/U grading basis.  "S" is recorded for A, B, C academic performance and "U" is recorded for D or F performance. First semester freshmen may not take courses S/U, unless the course is only offered on an S/U basis.

Incomplete Grades

Whenever a student cannot be assigned a grade at the end of a course in which he/she has been enrolled because his/her work is incomplete for an appropriate reason, the instructor will postpone the grade for the student and report to the registrar an "I" for the student's grade.  An "I" grade may be assigned only when (1) the completed portion of the student's work in the course is of passing quality, and (2) there is such evidence of hardship as to make it unjust to hold the student to the time limits previously fixed for the completion of his work.

The time allowed for the removal of an "I" grade is one calendar year from the date of its recording. If not altered, a grade of "F" will be assigned automatically (Does not apply to courses taken for graduate credit). This will begin with courses taken during the Fall 2003 term.

Grade Change

Whenever it becomes necessary to assign to a student a grade in a subject in which his grade was Incomplete (I), or to report the assignment of a previously unreported grade, or to correct a grade erroneously reported, proper notification will be sent to the registrar on a grade change form provided for that purpose. (Note: Grade corrections must be processed within one semester of the original reporting date.)

Transferring Out of Engineering

An engineering student who wishes to transfer out of the College of Engineering but has a GPA that is not acceptable for enrollment in another college will be granted a Non-Engineering Semester to restore an acceptable GPA.  Only one semester (which includes no engineering, math and/or science courses that are required in the engineering curriculum) will qualify. A student who is enrolled in a non-engineering semester will NOT BE ALLOWED to pre-register in a SECOND non-engineering semester.

Services Available

The College of Engineering offers free Tutoring Sessions in the mathematics, basic sciences and lower level engineering courses. Consult the Engineering Dean's office for details.

The College of Engineering provides Career Services for graduating seniors, and for students seeking summer employment and Co-op opportunities.  For undergraduate opportunities contact the Career Services Office, W1025 Lafferre Hall, 882-4487.

The College of Engineering awards a number of Scholarships each year, which are based primarily on academic achievement.  For scholarship applications and information, contact the Undegraduate Program Secretary.  Applications may also be obtained in the MAE office.  The application deadline for College of Engineering Scholarships is February 1.

The Financial Aid Office, located in Jesse Hall, administers a wide variety of forms of financial aid, most of which are based on need.  For detailed information, contact the Financial Aid Office at 882-2751.  Most scholarship application deadlines are February 1 of each year.

The College of Engineering offers a Co-op Program, which provides an opportunity for a student to work for a company while completing a degree program.  For more details, contact the Career Services office, W1025 Lafferre Hall, 882-4487.
