MECHANICAL ENGINEERING CURRICULUM AND GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS A total of 126 credit hours are required for the Bachelor
of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Students must complete English 1000 or an equivalent. Nine credit hours must be completed in each of the Behavioral Science/Social Science (BS/SS) and
Humanities/Fine Arts (H/FA) areas. Courses should be taken from at least two different departments within each area.
The 18 credit hours must include at least one course at the 2000-level or above. For a more detailed list of BS/SS and H/FA courses, please follow the "courses" section of the MAE website. A list of approved courses is also available in the MAE Undergraduate Program Office. The
Missouri State Constitution requires a course in American history or government. Any one of the following courses will satisfy this requirement: History 1100, History 1200, History 2210, Political Science
1100. Note that these courses are in the BS/SS category.ME students satisfy an economics requirement by completing IMSE 2710, which is one of the required courses. In addition, students must
complete two writing intensive (WI) courses. MAE 3200 (Materials) is a WI course and is a required
MAE course. MAE 4260 (Experimental Stress Analysis) is another WI course as an MAE elective
. The second writing intensive course may be taken from the approved list of (WI)
courses which can be found at http://cwp.missouri.edu/.
All candidates for the B.S. in Mechanical Engineering are required to have a GPA of at least 2.0 based on all the courses with an Engineering designation (i.e., MAE, ENGR, CE, etc.). This requirement
includes all equivalent engineering courses transferred from other campuses of the UM system. To graduate, students must have a UM GPA of at least 2.0.
If an individual finds it necessary or desirable to request a substitution for a required course
or other degree requirement, then a change in the approved curriculum is, in effect, being requested. Since the curriculum structure is a faculty decision, any such changes will need to be brought to department faculty for consideration through a course substitution form and letter of petition with an endorsement signature from the advisor. It is essential that all such petitions be acted upon before any diversions from the established curriculum are made. No petition can be approved if it violates the minimum criteria of the national accreditation board (ABET).
Please note that a curriculum is a "living structure" and is subject to periodic changes as new technologies are brought on line for the benefit of all new graduates. Whenever such
curriculum changes
are made, a "phase in" policy is followed so that students in process are not unduly inconvenienced by changing requirements, but are alerted to the new opportunities, which they may choose to include among their electives. |
