Dr. Steven P. Neal (Project 1) Simultaneous Wave Speed and Thickness Estimation Given Only Single-Sided Access - Ultrasonic Nondestructive Evaluation Applications Thickness gaging is a major component of the ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation business. Currently, all thickness gages require either calibration on the material to be examined or prior knowledge of the wave speed within the material. A new solution approach to the simultaneous wave speed and thickness estimation problem was discovered at MU by Dr. Neal. This new approach may be used as the basis for the first self-calibrating thickness gage. New measurements and calculations are implemented using existing equipment. This is an ongoing project with the continuing goals of reducing the new approach to practice and understanding the range of applicability of the approach to ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation problems.
