A New Approach for the Detection of Weak Interface Signals

In certain remote sensing applications, propagating waves are introduced into a medium and the echo response from the medium is analyzed in order to detect an interface within the medium.  This project deals with the reduction to practice of a new measurement and data analysis approach, discovered at MU, for the detection of interfaces in the presence of noise.  The new approach requires only single-sided access.  In ultrasonics, the approach can be implemented in either an immersion or a contact mode.  The approach can be applied using one single-element transducer or using an array transducer.  The new interface detection technique is applicable with both mechanical waves (for example, acoustic waves) and electromagnetic waves, using existing equipment
