Program of Study
The Department offers graduate programs leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The master's degree program requires a minimum of 30 credit hours, including a maximum of 9 or 6 hours of thesis or project work. The candidate must submit a thesis or a project report to an examining committee and a final oral examination is required. The doctoral degree program requires a minimum of 72 credit hours beyond the bachelor's degree. A written qualifying examination is required for students who do not meet the departmental exemption rule. The candidate must pass a comprehensive examination and submit and defend his/her dissertation at a final oral examination.

Financial Aid                          ME Graduate Fellowships
Graduate research and teaching assistantships provide stipends ranging from $9,400 to $12,000 for 9 months plus a fee waiver. Additional research assistantships are also available during summer. Several MU Graduate School Fellowships and Scholarships are available for qualified students in addition to the assistantships. Most students receive either research or teaching assistantships and currently six graduate students receive fellowships.

Cost of Study
Fees for 2006-2007 are $276.40 per credit hour for residents or $713.70 for nonresidents. Supplemental fees include $11.30 per credit hour for computing and $50.50 for engineering courses.  International students must take 9 credit hours (full-time) for the fall and winter semesters until they satisfy the credit hour requirement.

Living and Housing Costs
Residence halls (dormitories including meals) are available at an average cost of $7,200 per year. Married student housing rents $320 to $425 per month. Privately owned rooms and apartments in the area are available at comparable and higher rents.

Student Group
The Department currently has 75 graduate students and 450 undergraduate students. Approximately 40 percent of the graduate students are doctoral students and 60 percent are international students.

Location
The University is located in Columbia, Missouri, midway between and 120 miles from St. Louis and Kansas City. The city population is approximately 80,000. Also located in Columbia are two small, private colleges: Stephens College and Columbia College. The city has consistently ranked high on Money magazine's list of most livable cities.

The University
The University of Missouri-Columbia (MU), established in 1839, is the oldest state university west of the Mississippi River.  MU is the largest of the four campuses of the Missouri system. Other campuses are located in Kansas City, Rolla, and St. Louis. MU enrolls a total of 23,000 students, including 6,000 graduate students in ninety-seven graduate degree programs. Also located on the MU campus are the Schools of Journalism, Law, and Medicine as well as the College of Veterinary Medicine. With its diverse program, MU is one of the five most comprehensive universities in the nation.

Applying
Application forms and further information may be obtained from the MAE Graduate Program Office. Applications for admission to graduate programs are accepted throughout the year.  Students may begin study at the start of the fall semester, winter semester or summer session. GRE General Test scores are required of all applicants. A minimum TOEFL score of 550 is recommended for international applicants.
