When a new course is being established where none previously existed, the institutional implications are clear - a new record must be created in the institutional course inventory. When an established course undergoes a change, the institutional implications are less clear because the change can range from an editorial modification of a course title or description to essentially replacing one course with an entirely different one. The following guidelines are designed to help to determine when official revisionary action is necessary and what form it should take.

The New Course Proposal Form and the Course Change Form are available in Microsoft Word. The forms must be signed by the department chair and submitted to the divisional dean. Divisional curriculum committees and dean must sign off before submitting to the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and/or the Graduate School.

  • Undergraduate Forms - Forms for undergraduate courses numbered 1-4999 should be submitted to Donna Bura, Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies, 128 Jesse Hall. In addition, forms for undergraduate courses must be sent electronically to Donna Bura at burad@missouri.edu.

  • Graduate Forms - Forms for graduate/professional courses numbered 5000-9999 should be submitted to Ruth Erwin, Graduate School, 210 Jesse Hall.

Course Change Form - Simple changes or modifications to an existing course. Use this form to:

  • Discontinue a course
  • Change course number
  • Change course title
  • Change credit hours
  • Change grading option
  • Change prerequisites or restrictions
  • Change course description
  • Change crosslisting

New Course Proposal Form
Use this form for:

  • Significant changes in course content (generally accompanied by change in course title).
  • Any change in course number that involves a change in course level.
  • Any change from temporary to permanent.
  • Replacement of one course or courses with another.
  • Significant changes to the course description.

Topics Forms - Topics courses are intended for one-time special offerings, or as opportunities to experiment with a new course prior to seeking approval for it as a regular course. Topics titles may only be offered for two semesters.
