1. In general, the number of hours for each course is given following the title of the course. In case the credit is variable, to be fixed in consultation with the teacher, that fact is indicated by a range of credit indicating minimum and maximum credit such as 1.0 - 10.0. Some course sections, although approved for variable credit, may be offered for specific credit. This is identified in the section or course comments which are printed underneath the course title or to the far right of the section information.


2. Frequently, course sections have specific content. Usually these are courses named Problems, Special Readings, Research or Topics. The specific content is noted in the section or course comment.


3. Days of course section meeting times are indicated as follows:


M-Monday T-Tuesday W-Wednesday
R-Thursday F-Friday S-Saturday

4. Abbreviations listed under "Sec" indicate type of instruction and have the following meaning:


LEC-Lecture
IL-Individual lesson
RSD-Recitation/seminar discussion
FLD-Field/clinical study
IS-Independent study
LAB-Laboratory
STU-Studio
INT-Internet Only

5. Course numbers

0000-0999 Skill development courses that do not count towards degree-requirements.

1000-1999 Freshmen Level Courses. Entry-level courses that have only skill development courses for course prerequisites.

2000-2999 Sophomore Level Courses. Intended primarily for second year or sophomore students who have the essential prerequisites or background. Considered lower-division.

3000-3999 Junior/Senior Level Courses. Intended primarily for third and fourth year (juniors and seniors) students who have the essential prerequisites or backgrounds.

4000-4999 Junior/Senior Level Courses. Intended primarily for juniors and seniors.

4950-4959 Upper division, undergraduate research courses.

4970-4994 Capstone Courses.

4991 Capstone/Honor Courses. Courses that are both capstone and departmental honors courses.

4992 Capstone/Reading Courses.

4993 Capstone/Internship Courses.

4994 Capstone/Research Courses.

4996-4999 Departmental Honors Courses. Used only for departmental honors courses. Include Dept. Honors in title or course description.

5000-6999 Professional Level Courses for Law, Vet. Med. and Medicine. Generally not for undergraduate credit.

7000-7999 Graduate level courses for beginning and mid-level graduate students primarily. Generally not for undergraduate credit.

8000-8999 Graduate level courses intended primarily for mid and upper level graduate students. Not for undergraduate credit.

7001, 8001 and 9001 Topics (Graduate Level).

7087, 8087 and 9087 Seminar (Graduate Level).

8090 Masters Thesis Research.

9000-9999 Graduate level courses intended primarily for upper level graduate students. Not for undergraduate credit.

7085, 8085 and 9085 Problems Courses.

9090 Doctoral Dissertation Research

Course numbers prior to FS2004

1-99 courses primarily for freshman and sophomores.

100-199 courses primarily for undergraduates no graduate credit.

200-299 courses for undergraduates, appropriate professional students, and for graduate students except those whose graduate major is in the department in which the course is offered.

300-399 courses for undergraduates, appropriate professional students, and for graduate students without restriction to major.

400-499 primarily for graduate students and appropriate professional students in special programs. Undergraduates admitted only with the approval of the instructor of the course and the dean of the division in which the course is offered.

500-699 Law, Medicine or Veterinary Medicine courses

6. Wheelchair Accessibility - Classrooms that are not accessible are marked NHA in the (Special Notes)/Section Comments column in the listing of courses. Contact the Disability Services (882-4696) for enrollment assistance.


7. Some courses offered have been determined by the UMC Safety and Risk Management Committee to have sufficient eye hazard that protective eye covering is required to meet eye protection regulations. These courses are identified in the Schedule of Courses by the insertion of a course comment appearing beneath the course title. The type of eye protection required is defined in the following :

1- Hazard requiring students to purchase approved eye protection wear. Approved safety glasses meeting A.N.S.I. Standard A87.I are available at the Student Health Service. Safety goggles must meet A.N.S.I. Standard Z87.1 to be approved and are available at the bookstores.

2 Occasional eye hazard - eye protection will be loaned when necessary.

3 Special eye hazard - eye protection will be loaned by the department when necessary.
