Application

Radiochemistry is the study of properties, applications and relationships of radioactive elements. With widening application in the fields of medicine, the environment, energy and defense, the uses for radioactivity and nuclear chemical techniques are growing. And so is the demand for trained radiochemists in all of these fields.

The University of Missouri-Columbia (MU) has a distinct advantage for meeting this need as the home of an outstanding consortium of faculty and facilities, including several science and engineering departments, a School of Medicine, a College of Veterinary Medicine, the Nuclear Science and Engineering Institute, the Radiopharmaceutical Sciences Institute and the MU Research Reactor (MURR) Center, the nation’s largest university research reactor.

The University is not only producing tomorrow’s nuclear-based scientists, engineers and technicians. It is supplying much of the basic and applied research leading to technological advancements that contribute to improved quality of life and progress in our society. Well-educated nuclear scientists will continue to play an increasingly important role in these achievements.

The Radiochemistry Program in the MU Department of Chemistry brings together associated faculty to introduce students majoring in chemistry, biochemistry or engineering to the growing field of radiochemistry.
