Referral Process

The referral process is the student's opportunity to explore the many Work Study positions available. The jobs students choose will give them an opportunity to explore areas of career interest and develop marketable skills. The MU Career Center staff is available to help make the best match between a student and an employer. There are over 2600 opportunities listed and should be at least one to meet each student's unique needs. Students should allow at least 30 minutes to explore their options. Students may search the database one-on-one with a staff member or students may search the database on the world wide web. Once a position is decided upon, the student will be given or can print a referral form with the contact information. Students are instructed to report to the department with their referral form the first week of classes or within two days of receiving their referral. Students should expect that they may be interviewed as if this is a real job (which it is). If they need help preparing for an interview, the Career Specialist can work with them. A referral is not a guarantee; therefore, if after an initial interview the student is not hired or declines to take the position, the student should ask the employer to release them from the position and go back online to find a new position. If the student accepts the position, he/she needs to report to the contact person (also listed on referral form) to fill out all necessary payroll forms. See the Payroll/Employment Forms and Procedures section for details.
